Topic: Regular joe making a big difference

I'm not sure if you heard about the rescue of three girls who had been kidnapped and were being held against their will.  A regular joe heard screaming and chose to respond to it.  He did the right thing and helped to get those unfortunates rescued.

He's been all over the internet in interviews by folks who think he's "different", but I think what's remarkable about him is that he's not different at all.  He was just a guy having lunch and by doing the right thing made a huge difference.  He's got a real presence about himself - completely comfortable in his own skin.

Anyway - kudos to him.

That whole thing is weird 3 brothers kidnapping 3 teens and keeping them in the same house for 10 yrs. its a good thing this guy came along when he did.

Re: Regular joe making a big difference

I'd definitely have to recommend against the whole kidnapping concept.

Re: Regular joe making a big difference

some weird stuff going on all over; what about that guy who's invented a plastic gun and wants to put the plans on the internet so any dick can make one?

over here we've just got all these "hero's" of stage and screen that have turned out to be paedophiles, how sick can you get?

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Well Phill, here's the thing.  I could rant for hours about this, but I won't.

Only for a few minutes.  smile

I realize there is a VAST cultural difference between the US and the UK, and I feel at least SOMEWHAT qualified to talk about it since I have lived in both places and become immersed in both cultures.  (North Yorkshire, England, 1998-2002 -- a little village just outside of Darlington, County Durham.)

Here in America, most of us enjoy a culture where guns are a part of it.  (Note that I said MOST, not all.)  The right to keep and bear arms has been part of our national fabric since (almost) day one.  Some choose not to have guns in their homes, and that is fine.  The operative word being CHOOSE.

However, more and more people feel that this constitutional right to keep and bear arms is in danger.  They feel that we may go the way of the UK or Australia, and to them (OK, I admit it ... us), that is just intolerable.  So, if the goverment of the US decides to subvert the constitution and start confiscating firearms, this "d*ick's" idea is A way to for us to defend our own rights which many people have died to defend.

BTW:  I can spend hundreds (thousands? - no idea) on a 3D printer to print a gun which may or may NOT fire, or I can spend $100 (seriously - no joke, I've checked) and buy a used Avtomat Kalashnikova (AK-47*) from a "guy" in [pick your favorite big city] which I know WILL fire.  The point being that "any d*ck" can already GET one!  More/stricter gun control laws will not fix this!  Criminals don't give a rat's a** about laws!

(Sorry, off my soapbox now.)

The bottom line is this:  Criminals do not follow laws.  No amount of gun regulation will make an iota's difference to someone who is willing to break the law.  Gun laws only harm law-abiding citizens who only wish to defend their families and property from low-life scum.

Say like, in the case of Tony Martin?  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Martin_(farmer)  (The link won't work, so copy and paste into your browser as needed.)

For anyone who disagrees, think about this: Here's a great  idea:  Let's outlaw heroin and cocaine.  Yeah.  That'll surely keep them off the streets.   Right?  Just like prohibition!  That worked!

I don't expect everyone to like it, nor even necessarily to understand it, but that's the way it is.  And I thank God every day for it.

* = By the way folks, most (not all) AK-47's are crap.  Most are throw-away weapons which are manufactured in China at about $9 apiece.  If you are shopping and can actually FIND one right now, get a .223/NATO 5.56 (which most people refer to generically as an "AR-15").  Better quality weapon.

Personally, I prefer my S&W .357 magnum or my HK-45C.  They fit better under my pillow.  smile

I'm done.  Have a nice day.

So anyway, back on topic.

I agree with very little of what our "exalted" DHS Secretary Napolitano (aka "Big Sis") says or does, but one thing she said strikes a chord (no pun intended):  "If you see something, say something."

Kudos to the guy who did!

Re: Regular joe making a big difference

I heard he put up the post about the plastic guns too show the politicans that anyone can have a gun. I know one thing for sure I will never give up my guns. Astro, the ak is cheap but it has proven itself too be one of the most durable weapons out there. It was voted #1 in the assault rifle catagory by the Military Channel. There are alot of cheap knock offs made badly out there. Glock makes some kind of plastic type of gun already. I have a 357 mag. (Taurus),a 12 guage Mossburg shotgun and a Winchester 30.06. All good guns.

Re: Regular joe making a big difference

[Three Found] in Ohio, N.Young

In 1970 CSNY sang 'four dead in Ohio" in their song "Ohio" written in response May 4, 1970 Kent State incident. Almost forty-three years to the day of this event three women were discovered being held captive outside Cleveland, Ohio. This is a tragic situation but it's not about plastic guns and 3D printers. In fact, nary a weapon has been mentioned thus far. No, sadly the crux of this issue is far more sinister. The real issue is our society's increasing appetite for human apathy. I've read the opposite of love is not hate but apathy. This situation in Ohio is a vivid example. I'm not saying the neighbors are evil just part of a society which allows if not encourages apathy.

I'm guilty. I live in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. There are 360 homes in my neighborhood and approximately 20 homes on my street. Many neighbors but how many do I know? How many do I routinely talk to, barbecue with, or visit? Virtually none. Not all of America is like this but I'm sure I'm not alone in this. As far as I know something as sinister as this kidnapping could be occurring next door to me. I don't know. Why just yesterday my wife told me a boy who lives four doors down the street from us overdosed on heroin this week. I don't know the boy, never met him but I drive by his house everyday. I may have spoken to his mother once. I do wave at her when I see her working in the yard. Is this okay? Is this the way we unite as neighbors? As a nation?

Charles Ramsey is a hero. He chose to "love" his neighbor by saying no to apathy. God bless him for it! He should be celebrated as a hero and his actions heralded as what is expected in this countryl

In 1966 Buffalo Springfield sang these words in the song "For What It's Worth":

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down.

It's time we join the chorus.

It's really hard to believe they had these girls for 10 years.  And the guy that finally rescued them is ok in my book.  I am sure we will hear a lot more in the upcoming weeks.

I've knocked on every door in my neighborhood.  I've been inside probably about a third of the homes.  Our neighborhood (residential zone) is between a library (commercial zone) and a hospital (commercial zone) so we have special case things come up with the town from time to time.  When these affect our neighborhood, my wife and I bring it to the attention of our neighbors so we can act in concert.  If you want to get to know your neighbors, go meet them.  All the dog walkers know one another pretty well.  Also, I sit on a porch swing on a frame out in our front yard and pick guitar.  Folks come by and chat.  It's great.  As a result, we frequently have informal get togethers on the spur of the moment.  Just Sunday we had a Cinco de Mayo party with fifteen folks at the house that no one even thought to do it until 2:00.  By 5:00, we had dinner, drinks, games, and folks dropping in.  Everyone pitched in some and so no one had any burden.  Good stuff.

Z,
I have not gone knocking on doors, but i keep an eye out for anything strange.  I walk up and introducemyself to people I see in their yards and I do know most teh people on my side street and the other end of the block.

Has anyone heard of the study on why neighbors do not know each other well anymore?  It boils down to two words  AIR CONDITIONING  In the days befor it, everyone sat out in their yards because the house was hotter.  you would talk back and forth from yard to yard and everyones kids played together.  Not so much anymore.  What! its 100 out there, im staying right here in my cool 68 degree room in my  lazy boy!

Ill admit in the summer in TX for the past few yrs with 102+ temps,, we dont go out till after dusk! LOLOL

That's because they aren't genuine Kalishnakovs.  They're craptastic type 56 knock-offs.   Real Russian Kalishnakovs are some of the finest assault rifles ever built.

Ah yeah..

However, more and more people feel that this constitutional right to keep and bear arms is in danger.

They should relax, because it's not.  It is long since settled law that the right to keep and bear arms is an individual right, and no one wants to change that.   All the "They're gonna take our guns!!!" paranoia is simply hysteria intended to drum up sales.  And if the price of 9mm and .45 is any indicator, it's been entirely successful.

No argument, which is why I was careful to use the word "most" twice.  Just like "AR-15", the moniker "AK-47" has become a generic term.  (However, personally I still prefer the .223/5.56.)

Here, we will agree to disagree.

There are plenty of anti-gun people who would change it if they could.  And anything in the constitution is subject to change with the right (or wrong in this case) people in power and on the judicial benches.

Re: Regular joe making a big difference

I have been watching the news.  Seems our hero is beating himself up pretty badly.  He lived there a year and never noticed anything.  He knew the guy, barbequed with him, saw his "grandchildren" playing in the back yard with the dogs, and never noticed anything amiss.  During one interview he said something to the effect of, "either I'm really dumb, or this guy is that good."  He's beating himself up over being "really dumb".  That's tough, and he's clearly a lower class average Joe.  I feel for the dude.  I hope he is able to get past his own issues with this, and truly realize that he DID do something GOOD!

As far as neighbors... I can honestly say I don't know mine well at all.  I don't even know how many people live in that house.  I only know ABOUT them from other people that have told me they're good people.  I've lived here over 10 years and have only ever waved hello while mowing the lawn.  Up until now, it's been nice to not have nosy neighbors, and not be the nosy neighbor but to just co-exist quietly next door.  After my daughter disappeared Sunday (Autism... wandered off and within earshot never answered me when I was calling her - police were called to help search, etc...) and was found on our neighbors side porch hiding behind a large planter... I think it's time to bring over cookies and finally get to know them a little better.

No, it's not.  The Constitution doesn't give you the right to bear arms, it says the government will not impede your right to bear arms.   That right exists whether the Constitution says anything about it or not.   This is an issue settled by the Supreme Court in DC vs Heller.  It is an individual right.

There are plenty of people that would change all kinds of stuff about everything.  It doesn't mean they can.    No one is going to take guns away from anyone.   It's a dead issue for everyone except people that need you to be afraid that someone is going to take your guns.  They aren't.  So relax.
