Topic: Frustrated

I post last week in
GAS I played a new guitar at the music store know I hate mine. The new guitar was the Teton spruce top electric acoustic it felt good when j pick it up noticed the fret bars were higher and wider then on min strings were lower and first strum I could hear clean notes. Back home I've played my guitar for a week and can't stand playing it it hurts my fingers and just dosent sound right so I hang it up and play my strata but I realy want to play my acoustic ive done a nut and bridge job to it and help it out some but still plays muddy note most of the time unless I stop strike each string and add just pressure and location but can't play from cord to cord. It's is strung with D Addario ej16 lights  would stringing with nylon strings help this is my first guitar would real like to make it work

Re: Frustrated

It's possible that your guitar , just needs a good setup from a good Luthier. I recently purchased a guitar from a friend that was hard to play , the intonation was terrible and didn't sound very good. I did the work myself , but I would seek help with someone with experience . With a truss rod adjustment and filing the nut and bridge , new strings , you would not believe it was the same guitar , easy to play , intonation on , and resonates. Maybe yours just needs help and it' s a lot cheaper than buying a new guitar.

Re: Frustrated

Hi ya Fire art. You mentioned that you did a nut and bridge job. Did you do a truss rod adjustment? A trip to a good Luthier just might help you decide what to do or just let him/her do a proper set up on it. I did a set up on a cheap beater guitar, it turned out pretty well and I had fun learning how to do it. Eventually I traded it for a yamaha 12er as I really did'nt need two six string guitars.

Re: Frustrated

Bad thing is that the guitar you have now will never sound as good as the one you want. You will always find something wrong with it because you're comparing it to something that you perceive as new and better. Play what you got and save up for the one you want.

This may prove helpful on set-up issues, FireArt:

I followed this lady's advice when I redid my ol' Norman last year, and it's playability and sound improved dramatically. I did need to readjust the truss rod a bit as I got a little over-zealous the first time. Take care to only adjust it about 1/8 turn each time before rechecking. Measuring neck relief (bow) at the 12th fret is also valuable advice, as this mid-point is where too-flat VS too-bowed will be most noticeable. I'm no expert, but a little patience coupled with proper guidance made a big difference.
