Your towns best known band? (Page 1 of 2)

Oh yeah.  The Conchords (spelling is important in this one) are hilarious.  My favorite is "Bowie's in Space":

I don't know of any bands that have made it to any level of recognition whatsoever who are from any of the towns I have lived in.

The closest affiliation I have is vicarious.  My son lives in Denton (Texas), and the Eli Young band was formed at the college he attends.

EDIT:  Don Henley (the Eagles) attended that college too, but it was before he moved to California and met Glenn Frey, so that probably doesn't count.

Nantucket was the big local band of my youth - they made a few albums - I actually saw them open for AC/DC in Dallas, TX - I was the only person singing every word of their songs. They've been making a comeback recently - saw them open for Heart a few years ago in Raleigh. Great fun-time band.

Hootie and the Blowfish also used to tour the local bars before they became big time - great Bar Band!

Flight of the Chonchords was a great act.

In Seattle, though, the list of impact bands is long and distinguished.

How far back do you want to go?  50s?  How about the Whalers (of Louie Louie fame) or the Ventures?  60s?  Hendrix, duh.   70s?  Heart. Robert Cray got started in Eugene Oregon, even though he didn't grow up out here.   80s?  How about Queensryche?  I don't think a bigger impact band than Mother Love Bone ever existed.   Out of that sprouted a whole lot of 90s bands including Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney.  And then there's the others, Nirvana and Alice in Chains, amongst others not so huge like Candlebox, The Melvins,  and the Posies.   In the new century, we're responsible for a whole lot of music, including the Presidents of the United States of America,  Death Cab for Cutie, Neko Case, Brandie Carslile (who grew up about a mile from me) and a bunch of up-and-comer alt-country acts, including Zoe Muth and The Swearengins.

It's a good place to be if you like music. 

I bet the list for NY and NJ would be a long one also Oh and as for national acts Idd say Tx has had quite a few legends too,, cahughcaugh (Buddy Holly, SRV, Willy, ZZTOP......) but Im thinking the list was for acts that are not a common name. or super huge. then again I could be wrong

Probably the best known from my area are jazz singer Nancy Wilson, country singer Johnny Paycheck and country-rock band Pure Prairie League.

Correct.  And now that I think about it some more, when I lived in NE England from 1999-mid 2002, I learned that David Coverdale (Whitesnake) was from a little town called Saltburn, which is in County Cleveland, which is where I worked.  Again, vicarious.

In the Worcester area when I was young (the 70s). There was a band called  FATE . They had 2 cover songs on the local AM radio station WORC. If you didn`t like them, you were considered to be a communist or something. Then the big thing, DUKE AND THE DRIVERS, they just came out with an album on ABC records? They played a dance at my high school right when the album came out.
. Then if anyone remembers ORPHEUS. They had a big hit called Can`t Find The Time. And the Road Apples. They had a big hit on Polydor called Let`s Live Together.       Then in 1978, the next town over (Shrewsbury) had a rock concert in Dean Park. After that they did not allow any more rock concerts and wouldn`t allow an up and coming group to play there. A band called The Cars.

I am from Windsor, ON - and Niel Young's very first solo performance was right here in my town.

The only name band from Windsor that I can recall is "The Tea Party"
