Topic: Failed Marriage

A little while ago Sue my first wife (we divorced 30 odd years ago) sent me a poem. Me being me I decided to put it to music so here it is. I have also recorded it although it is really a ladies song, so you will have to imagine me in a wig, dress and with lippy on if you listen to it. The photo is us on our wedding day.

Failed Marriage Words by Susan Hoefkens

Music by Roger Guppy

Intro:

[G][Em][C][D]

Verse 1:

Nineteen [G]sixty nine was a very [Em]eventful year,

[C]Romance, marriage, and a [D]daughter so dear,

On hold [G]went the love that we [Em]felt for each other,

Just [C]learning to be a good [D]father and mother.

[C][D]

Verse 2:

Bet[G]ween us we had made a wonder[Em]ful new life,

But in the [C]meantime forgetting to be [D]husband and wife,

Pouring [G]all our love into a [Em]daughter so dear,

A very [C]hard time that, our [D]very first year.

[C][D]

Verse3:

[G]So much so we began to [Em]drift apart,

For[C]getting what once we felt [D]deep in our heart,

That [G]was the time that our marriage [Em]came to an end,

No [C]longer my husband and not [D]even my friend.

[C][D]

Chorus:

[C]Why it went wrong, why were [D]we so bitter?

The [C]reasons are many but [D]now do not matter,

For after [G]all is said and done, it is only [Em]time that mends,

We both [Am]care for Donna and we are [D]now good friends.

[C][D]

Verse 4:

We made [G]big mistakes by lis[Em]tening to others,

Taking [C]wrong advice from, family, [D]friends and lovers,

This [G]meant you missed out on our [Em]daughter’s life,

For the [C]sake of my new husband, and of [D]your new wife.

[C][D]

Verse 5:

But a [G]happy woman she has [Em]now become,

Knowing [C]she can talk to her dad [D]and her mum,

So [G]in the end we have got [Em]something right,

Even after [C]all these years and a [D]bitter hard fight.

[C][D]

Chorus:

[C]Why it went wrong, why were [D]we so bitter?

The [C]reasons are many but [D]now do not matter,

For after [G]all is said and done, it is only [Em]time that mends,

We both [Am]care for Donna and we are [D]now good [G]friends.

Re: Failed Marriage

Most touching, Roger.  My compliments to both the lryicist and songsmith.  I enjoyed your recording.  Very glad that the bitterness has faded and that you two are good friends.

We have had a blossoming of very personal songs on the forum lately - quite a phenomenon.  James

Re: Failed Marriage

Thank you for your comments. However most of the credit is Sue's as she did the hard part writing the lyrics. Unfortunately she is not a member of Chordie (although I know she views the postings) so she is unable to comment herself.

She had no idea what I was doing to her poem until I put it on Myspace and asked her to listen to a new song I had put there. She had not kept a copy it and was somewhat shocked and surprised to hear me singing her words, but she did like it and gave me permission to post it here.

Re: Failed Marriage

GOOD LYRICS THERE.

but this line "Taking wrong advice from, family, friends and lovers,"

so, she took advice from lovers? no wonder the marriage never lasted ,lol .hee hee hee

sorry!! couldnt resist that

very nice song indeed.

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: Failed Marriage

Thanks Ken,

You have obviously read the lyics carefully to note that and I had not noticed the implication.

For clarification the 'Taking wrong advice from family, friends and lovers' refers to the bitter fighting after the seperation. For several years we were both torn between doing right by our daughter and appeasing new partners. It was a horrendous time for both of us and much was said and done that should not, but we are older and wiser now and have put all that behind us.

Re: Failed Marriage

Hey Roger - Nice conversion of poem to song - I have a little trouble with that myself. As for the lyrics and story of the song I can relate very closely. In America there is (or was I don't see that side of it so much today) a tendency for fathers to be go to work and leave the family matters to the moms which would tend to generate a bit of a separation from them and the family which if not addressed tended to sink the marriage. I saw it happen to my parents and swore it would not happen to me but it almost did anyway. The amazing thing about what happened with you and Susan and how you managed to understand how things went wrong, get over them and still be close friends.

All in all well done song and a heart felt story.

Thanks,

Jeff
