Topic: Protecting myself from the netherworld

I think it was Pete Benson who told me that if I play guitar and sing for others while not wearing a hat that I'd go to a very warm and unpleasant place upon death.  He further told me that baseball hats don't count.  I tried several different hats.  But I've found one that I think will work.  It is made with - believe it or not - paper.  Well 63% paper and 37% polyester.  It looks like raffa, but is much, much more comfortable.

I had hoped to get some snapshots with my web cam, but will have to enlist some assistance or try to find a tripod to use a regular camera to get all the different hats I've tried.

I've always wanted a cool guitar hat. Never tried searching for one tho. Maybe pics will inspire me. Or maybe I'll lose all hope after seeing how good Sir Zurfwalker looks in his.

Oh man!  I missed out on it!  LOL!

Does this whole hat thing apply to women too?  Or just men?  Or is it just to sheild your skype freinds from the "lightbulb effect"?  wink

Re: Protecting myself from the netherworld

I'm going to let you in on a secret.  There is no lightbulb over my head.  That's a bright idea on the verge of formation.

You'll have to ask Pete whether the hat thing applies to ladies too, but I think it doesn't.  I think it only applies to self-professed fans of strumming country tunes using cowboy chords, such as myself.

Nevertheless, I am now prepared.

Re: Protecting myself from the netherworld

In the neck of the woods I come from, it is considered bad luck to play Bluegrass or Country without a hat, sorry Zurf, ball caps are not considered Hats smile  I always felt wearing a Hat,  is good insurance to keep the Bad Vibes away and some Hats have lots of Mojo smile

Amy , Hats do not apply for girls, holding the guitar just right and smiling once in a while is all that is required smile

Re: Protecting myself from the netherworld

It was WAYNE!  Not Pete.

Pete and Wayne have both been maligned.  My apologies to each of them.

My new hat does not have mojo yet, but I will be working on putting some into it.  I have two hats with mojo, but they are both felt hats much too warm for Virginia spring or summer, especially inside.  One is a hunter green crusher fedora my sister decorated for me with scraps and buttons and such that all came from family items.  There's a big wooden button from my grandfather's work apron, some lace from my grandmother's wedding dress, a feather from a hawk that I scared accidentally while hiking with my sister, that sort of thing.  It is LOADED with three generations of mojo.  The other is a flat-top, flat-brim crusher I purchased for fall and winter hiking.  It is bright green with a purple hat band.  It is hideously distinctive.  My wife hates it.  I do not.  Its mojo comes from miles and miles and miles of trails and the experiences had with friends and nature while wearing it.  That hat once triggered an impromptu party on a rocky overlook of the Shenandoah River.  Now there's some hat mojo!

The new hat is a medium-high crowned,  wide brimmed, crushable, breathable fedora with just the right amount of pucker on the front of the crown for a proper three-fingered grab.  Once on, the brim naturally forms itself into a nice bend over the ears the way a wide-brimmed fedora should.

Phew!  I only own one hat, and it's a baseball cap.  I only wear it when my hair looks horrid and I have to go in public and haven't time to fix my hair.  LOL!

I often think I'd like to get a pretty sunhat, but I don't think I look good in hats.  I'm glad I'm not breaking any mojo rules without a hat.  smile  I will continue to smile occasionally!

To address your worries MKM.  First, guys actually like the ponytail through the ballcap look.  You aren't fooling anyone with it.  We know it means you didn't have time to "do" your hair.  We don't care.  It's cute.  Second, you'd look good in a proper sun hat.  Not all hats are for all people.  I see you with a straw hat with a large front brim wrapping around a bit on the side, or perhaps a bit floppy one made of raffia and a small crown.  But take Billie Joe (Chris' wife).  She wears that straw cowboy hat and it looks terrific on her, but I don't think that'd be your look.  Third, smiles work for everybody.  If you smile enough, you don't even have to hold a guitar.  You can just wiggle and bang a tambourine on your leg once in a while a la Josie and the Pussycats.

Re: Protecting myself from the netherworld

I don't know whether it applies to women.  I do know that all women look great in any kind of hat or cap.  And I know that some women do wear hats just to hide their frustated hair do's.  I don't wear hats often, though I do have a small collection mostly used for working out in the sun.

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Re: Protecting myself from the netherworld

I like a Greek Fisherman's hat. Cool look and just enough bill to shade the eyes from the sun and still allow one to look up and adjust sails without rocking the hat back.

Re: Protecting myself from the netherworld

I have about 17 cowboy hats, 35 ball caps, and dozens of others (fedoras, skullcaps, etc). Bald guitar dudes living in the desert can't leave home without em.  Disagree though re the ball cap thing. I love a low hanging ball cap brim while I'm singing.... If drunk it helps orient my face to the microphone.

Edit: I've also been known to sing in a full face chicken mask. Not sure if that equates to a hat...

Re: Protecting myself from the netherworld

I love to wear my Kahaki /greyish Lukenbach ball cap.  I cant find a good straw cowboy hat (I always liked the ones Bret Michales  uses).  there are plenty of cheep ones in the gas stations around here, but I need to find a cool one.

My son is the kid who looks good in any hat that sits on his head.  lucky kid!

Re: Protecting myself from the netherworld

Waddaya mean baseball caps don't count?  I've got over 40 in my closet (after giving more than 2 dozen to Goodwill 3 years ago) - I don't know how they accumulate, folks just give them to me.  In my neck of the woods there are just two kinds -  ball caps and "old man" hats.  If they're good enough for a lot of bluegrass pickers and guys like Hag and Willie (before they got old and started wearing "old man" hats), they're good enough for me.  If you wear any other type cap around my buddies you'll probably hear remarks about a new "sheriff wannabee" in town.......................

ha ha ha!

Someday, my hair will be long enough to make a pontail (assuming no more haircuts from the kids).  I do need a sun hat.  I used to have one, but the kids ruined it.  I didn't wear it in public, but it was so comfy in the back yard.  Billie-Jo looks FANTASTIC in her cowgirl hat.  I think she'd look fantastic in anything though.  smile  If I wasn't such a northerner, I would try to get away with it.  Having said that... I do actually own a plethora of winter hats that I wear all winter long.  I guess I do think I look good in those, although, I don't think they'd be appropriate for guitar playing in the summer.

Definitely a song in there:  "Low-Hangin' Ball Cap".

And there's definitely a story in there which is probably also song-worthy.
