Topic: Im after some advice please

hi..

im learning "smells like teen spirit" by nirvna from the nevermind book i brought recently from amazon, im no pro but not long after starting i could tell it sounded alot different to the track i got on pc, now i know some of this is down to the fact ive just started learning it and im not brilliant, but there is a major difference to the actual song, ive found a few tabs on various tab sites but 1 i have found looks alot like the book im learning from infact id say about 90% the same, there a few things are diff, but it instanty sounded alot better, and it tells you to strum up/down which the book doesnt??

i told myself i would only learn from proper books as there seems to be so many diff methods used online, but this tab online sounds alot better than the book, i dont think the book is official like the greenday book i have, is there any actual official nirvana books?

this is what my book tells me to play

-    - -        -   -  -      -  -  - -  -    -               -     -  -         - -   -  -    -   -  -      -    -

sorry its a bit wobbly lol, the song on net looks alot like this, but the few small changes seem to make a huge diff in sound, i dont know whether to keep goin with this book or sell it and try find a genuine 1 if there is 1, or learn from the net, i just want to learn the songs how there meant to be played, and nirvana keeps coming up as a "easy" band to start with

all help greatly appreciated

Re: Im after some advice please

The proof in how it sounds.  If it sounds right, it is right.  I wouldn't limit myself to "proper books" as they can get it just as wrong as someone on the internet.

Re: Im after some advice please

well i wanted to stick to genuine band books which surely should be right if they come from the band?? but this book ive got for nirvana is transcribed by 2 diff people, and it just dont sound right where as the little bit off the net sounds alot more like the song, i dont wanna waste my time learning from this book if its wrong, are there any genuine nirvana books out there?

Re: Im after some advice please

ive just noticed there is a "revised edition" of the book i have got, the revised edition if by "hal leonard" so maybe my book is wrong and they have changed it in the revised edition, what are these hal leonard books like are they bang on with the songs?

why does there seem to be no authentic nirvana books

Well that's the thing about books.  They rarely come from the band.  They're licensed from the band by some guy who sits down and transcribes what he's hearing just like anyone else so inclined would do.  Hal Leonard is a major music publisher that does just that.  They have thousands of titles arranged for just about everything.  Ever want to play all those Adele hits on ukulele?  Hal Leonard is your man.  http://www.halleonard.com/product/viewp … ubsiteid=7

On the guitar, there are generally a couple of different ways to play something, so find one that works for you, and play that one.

NOt being a huge Nirvana fan, I cant say,,, but marty sounds pretty right on. YOu should also check out these other guys.  I have spent a lot of time going through the free you tube guitar lesson guys and here is who I watch the most. (I also have bought one of Martys DVD sets.  pretty good stuff. ,,, These are the links to the guys I was referancing.  you can link to more of their stuff  or subscribe to their channels.

(Of course you have Martys link already)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SW-8lYB … hs6-SdH424 (full distortion,com)
Of course there is always the Jamplay option,, but for free, between youcanleanguitar, martyzsongs, pappastash102,guitarjamz, and full distortion you should be covered pretty good.

hope thid helps.

Re: Im after some advice please

Gotta be careful on using those books. My wife bought me an Alice in Chains book because I love the band. I am currently learning to play the songs in the book and have found that the publisher has taken "liberties" with the chords.

Best thing is to listen to the music and then make changes in how you play the notes/chords accordingly.

BTW have you tried playing those power chords as barre chords? You may find the sound if you do that.

Re: Im after some advice please

thanx for the the advice guys really helpfull, the book is on ebay now hopefully sell it, the greenday book i got seems pretty much bang on well the 1st song anyway thats all ive tried learning, im trying to find out wot the difference is between my book and the revised edition, surely it must mean there is sometthing wrong??

also with the marty vid he only shows the first min or so of the lesson, is there follow on vids for the whole song?

and this is prob daft but i dont think i know the difference between oower chords and barre chords as ive only been learning on electric for a short time, i switched from acoustic but i didnt get very far into that tbh

Re: Im after some advice please

Tangent: Sometimes the transcribers try to transcribe what is really meant to be noise or texture. If something doesn't look like a chord, it probably isn't. The original player was probably sounding ghost notes or making noise. Don't worry about hitting those notes exactly. An example in SLTS would be the

x
0
0
0
x
x

chord. Although it's a G major, Cobain didn't really use it as a G major. He just hit open strings cuz they sound cool. Marty does a really good job of demonstrating that. Just lift up your hands and hit some notes. smile

Derek Trucks is also a master of this technique.  Check out .08, .13, .35 and repeatedly after .46: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et_4zxne_OE

Re: Im after some advice please

cool thanx, yer i know about the x's and the muted sound if thats what you mean? there is open strings in the book but it just dont sound like marty lol, im gonna try learn from martys vid see how i get on, thanx for all the help :-)

Re: Im after some advice please

Booz,

seeing as how your learning what different stuff the electric guitar can do,, take the time to watch Joes link, and a lot of stuff from PAPPA on different techniques.  Here are a few more to get you on the right track.
Oh since you like Greenday,, here are some links for them also

spend a little time on just watching techniques and getting ideas.

Re: Im after some advice please

thankyou!! i watched martys vid again for nirvana and within minutes i was playing and it sounded like marty...ish, just gotta work on speed and technique now but it already sounds million times better than the book!! thanx guys!

Re: Im after some advice please

Dont forget Kurt played a lot with his guitar detuned half a semitone to D# so if your guitar is tuned to E and your playing along to a version in D# it will sound wrong.  Off the top of my head the single version is played with normal tuning but the album version may be D#, I know pretty much all the live stuff is D#.

Lastly, most of Nirvana's catalogue sounds easy to play but he was a very good guitarist and even some of the easiest songs are difficult to get right!

Good luck.
