Topic: shoulder pain

I have started practicing for about two hours in the evening recently in the sitting position and am now suffering from a painful right shoulder.I am right handed.Just wondered if anybody out there has had similar problems.I know I'm knocking on a bit at 60 but have been in the building trade most of my working life and not had problems before.Any of you guys got any suggestions as to how to alleviate this problem as sometimes can hardly move in the morning.Cheers and seasonal greetings.

Re: shoulder pain

hi saggypants and welcome to chordie.

there is no substitute for practise. i'm 60 myself and have been playing since i was 15! so i've suffered most of the aches and pains somewhere along the line. posture has to be the reason for which you're aching. sit up as straight as possible and try not to look down at the strings when you're playing. i often practise solo's or instrumentals in the dark.
i remember a friend telling me when we used to watch bands play at the local dance; "you can always tell a professional guitarist `cos they dont look at the strings when they're playing." we all look occasionally but try not to look all the time.
get a feel for the notes and picture in your mind what you are about to play. and dont forget....sit up straight.

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: shoulder pain

Play standing up with a strap from time to time.

Re: shoulder pain

Maybe try to practice more often but for shorter times. I share your pain, I'm in construction and I quite often don't practice due to aches and pains n my hands.

Keep Rockin!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: shoulder pain

All good advice above,I am 63 and have done alot of laborous work and my body feels it now I belive it comes with the territory. I usually only go practice about an hour more or less, and sitting up will help, are you playing a heavy guitar will hurt also (most electric gibsons are heavy). You are not alone!
