Topic: Weirdest thing I've seen in a while . . .

Somebody emailed me a link to this video:

First off, I assume he's tuned to open . . . something.  G maybe?  Doesn't matter.  He's clearly talented.  That's not the weird part.

The weird part is:  look at the ANGLES of the bridge, the saddle, the nut and the frets!  I've never seen a guitar like this before.

That's wild!!!! The frets do a rainbow across the neck. I thought the neck was bent at first. I wonder what kind of research went into figuring out how all that would work.

He is very talented. Do you think he can play normal like the rest of us?

Keep Rockin!!!!!!!!!!!

My guess is that he can play much BETTER than most of the rest of us.

Re: Weirdest thing I've seen in a while . . .

I've seen Pat Metheny play those kind of fanned fret designs before. I don't quite grok the reasoning behind it, but it looks cool as heck, and if you can play one that well, ain't no one gonna argue with it.  smile

There are strings at every angle and tuning must be a nighmare smile.

Re: Weirdest thing I've seen in a while . . .

Did some research. The guy that makes this guitar seems to do fret fanning on instruments that he builds for open tunings.

Here's an FAQ on fret fanning. Apparently it's an ergonomics thing:

I was wondering whether it was ergonomics or whether it was an intonation thing.

He didn't hardly use his index finger...   (OK, that's a lie, but it is open tuning and might give you something to think about)

That thing is basically a portable harp.

Some of the comments below the video are hilarious.

"Grok" has been adopted by computer types for a long time, a suitable homage to Heinlein, I think.  It's used in essentially the same way.  "Yeah, I can code C#, but I really grok Perl."
