anyone can lay an acoustic track which will sound good. it's when it comes to multi-tracking that the metronome comes into it's own. in the 50's and 60's, they would use a second drummer on recordings, "off mic" to keep a true beat. with the on-set of digital recording, the metronome is built into the recording equipment, so an extra track for the time keeper is not needed. just thought it might be of interest.
