Topic: Set List Favorites....

I'm putting together a solo acoustic set list for bars and pubs. Although I've played quite a great deal of live shows, I have done none with just me and a guitar. Any more experienced solo acoustic weekend warriors have any favorite tunes to share? Thanks!

Re: Set List Favorites....

I am not an experienced solo acoustic weekend warrior in any way shape or form... but one song that people always seem to like to hear that I can play (as long as I practice a little before hand so I don't screw it up too badly), no matter the age range of the group (from the teens my son hangs with to the baby boomers my Dad hangs with) is "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley.  BEST WISHES BGD, I'm sure you'll do great!

Art and beauty are in the eyes of the beholder.
What constitutes excellent music is in the ears of the listener.

Re: Set List Favorites....

Depending on the crowd almost any Johnny Cash song or Billy Joel's Piano Man work good for me. If you can add the Harmonica  on Piano Man or any other song it's a big plus also. Tell us what you have so far.

Hey BGD..  just played 2 gigs this past weekend..  agree entirely with Tyson7.. any Johnny Cash. We do Folsom Prison, Ring of Fire and Jackson..  folks like it alot.  They also seem to go for Van Morrison..  Crazy Love, Into the Mystic.. Tupalo Honey.  Good luck..  let us know how it goes.

Re: Set List Favorites....

Been playing a single for the last 20 years. I like a wide variety of material for varying audiences. Gotta have love songs for the ladies, naughty songs for just guys and drunks, kids songs, blues, rock and country songs and novelty songs to grab 'em when their attention flags.
I managed to cram 400+ tunes in one book but I try not to use my book unless I get requests or need an obscure song.
I learned to get away from backing tracks (they limit spontaneity) and prefer to not use my P.A. system of harmonizer pedal. Just voice and guitar are best but when your crowd is drinking or more than 20 you need amplification.
BGD, I will e-mail you my set list if you like.

@Toots yes please!!!

@Tyson7

These are the tunes that I've learned in the last month specifically for this project:
Bouncing Round the Room - Phish
Grey Street - DMB
Melissa - Allmans
In the Air Tonight (up tempo) - Phil Collins
Beyond the Sea (still working on walking the bass line)
Long Black Veil
Oh Girl - Shilites
Space Captain
You Don't Know me (still working on this)
Times Like These - Foo Fighters
Best of You - Foo Fighters
No Diggity - Blackstreet
Three Little Birds - Marley
Walking In Memphis - Marc Cohn
Waiting on the world to change - John Mayer
Human Nature - Michael Jackson
Creep - Radiohead
Tiny Dancer - Elton John
Ziggy Stardust - Bowie
Soulshine - Warren Haynes
I'm Yours - Jason Mraz
Blue Sky - Allman Bros
Poker Face - Lady Gaga
All Night Long - Lionel Richie
Space Oddity - Bowie
The Remedy - Jason Mraz
Crazy Love - Van Morrison
Little Red Corvette - Prince
Message In A Bottle - John Mayer version
Feels Like Rain - John Hiatt
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

From my 4 piece I also know and can get through these without having to do any re-arranging:
Into the Mystic - Van Morrison
Use Me Up - Bill Withers
Can't You See - Marshall Tucker
Knocking on Heaven's Door
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Stir it Up
Simple Man
What's your Name
The Weight
Drift Away
Rooster - Alice in Chains
The Mountains Win Again - Blues Traveler
Crazy - Aerosmith
Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson
I Wish - Stevie Wonder
Little Wing (w/vocals, not the SRV version)

I'm definitely adding that Gnarls Barkley tune. That is an awesome idea.

I have my ipad all rigged up so I can take requests and sight read stuff like Margaritaville, American Pie, Why Dont We Get Drunk And Screw, etc.

Re: Set List Favorites....

I'm impressed with the list.  Especially I Wish - a synth tune sung by the uniquely voiced Stevie Wonder being played on acoustic guitar by a guy who is not Stevie.  Very cool.  I would love to hear a recording of you guys doing that, as it's one of my favorites.  I maintain a playlist from my iPod called "Songs to be played loudly", and that is one of the key songs on it.

Re: Set List Favorites....

Great set list, Very diverse. A little something for everyone . That's what keeps the whole crowd involved. I see a couple I will have to add to my own list. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Set List Favorites....

Thanks Dino I'll do that!

Zurf the arrangement we do is pretty cool. I play the synth lead on my electric through a POG and sing lead. The solo acoustic thing is coming together nicely too... I'll upload something as soon as I'm happy enough with it that I don't mind it being on youtube forever.

Try Long Haired Country Boy by Charlie Daniels and Six Days on the Road. I've always found these to get a good response. Lots of luck BGD      Butch

Re: Set List Favorites....

Living where I do, it's a tendency of mine to play some things that are not Sweet Home Alabama or Margaritaville.  I like things like the Ballad of Hollis Brown or Treetop Flyer. I'll play these before any request song.
