Topic: muted?

Hey I have heard peaple talking about playing muted guitar. what is a muted guitar?

Re: muted?

Hi deaken,
If your talking about palm muting, it's when you rest the palm of your picking hand lightly across the strings while you strum.  The notes or chords dont ring out as loud and clear as a regular strum and sustain is cut down as well.

Re: muted?

It might also be for muting certain string with your left hand.

I play this chord in my band just now:

E|X
B|12
G|0
D|X
A|14
E|-

Havn't a Clue what its called but the point is that an open D string would sound mince so I let the flabby bit of my finger touch the string lightly and stop it from playing. I do the same with the open high E. Took me ages to get the hang of. Means you can happily strum with your right hand without worrying about hitting wrong notes.

Re: muted?

Palm muted playing is a big part of the heavily overdriven rock/metal sound. Make sure gain is at maximum (on my Vamp2 there's a preset 'Crazy Diamond' where you just blow on the strings and they scream) and the guitar volume and tone are right up. This is crazy loud for ordinary playing but placing the palm of your picking hand over the bridge and onto the strings damps them down to the point that they sing just right
