Topic: Nela's going to Shreveport

Well, just got the job offer I was looking for and, even though the $$$$ are a little light, it looks like I will be heading to Shreveport. I guess a cut in pay will be offset by my being a lot closer to my wife's house. I'm working in New Orleans, now, and it's a 300 mile trip home. From Shreveport it will be just under a 100 miles.

I hear ya NELA - In this market, in our industry, I'm just thankful to be employed. I was out of work for 6 months. took a pay cut and moved 700 miles from the wife to land some work. It's as bad as I've ever seen it.

Re: Nela's going to Shreveport

I hear ya, TD. The company I'm with now has 3 different jobs that are in liquidated damages. One of them since January. They have lost the bond, are being sued by the owners on 2 different projects. They are not bidding any more work and as they cannot get a bond for another project. The CEO has resigned, the Human Resources Director has resigned, Accounts Payable Director has resigned, two Project Managers have quit, the General Project Superintendent has quit, but everythings fine. I gotta get away from this train wrect before it's too late.

Yep.  Good thinking.  It's a lot easier to find work when you have it than when you need it.

My brother's been out for quite a while, and he's an accomplished engineer with a long list of cost-saving implementations and plant start-ups to his credit.  It's rough.  I thank God on a regular basis for my own good fortune.

NELA - It's a smart move to jump a sinking ship. My company is primarily in multi-family. Mid-Atlantic (Maryland / VA / DC area) and TX seems to be the hot spots. We actually see a lot of growth in those locations and are hiring.

Re: Nela's going to Shreveport

Hmmmmmm. What kinda multi-family? I have over 16 years experience in multi-family renovation projects - NATIONWIDE. I was a Vice President / General Superintendant for a company outta Texas (out of buisness, now) and I traveled all over setting up projects. At 1 time I held over 20 General Contractor' license' for the company. Presently I only have a State of Florida, Class B license that's active. Small world.

Congrats on getting the job Nela!  I'm glad to hear you'll be closer to your wife, and hopefully working for a more stable company.  smile  My husband is in construction too, but he is a Union Ironworker (bridge, structural, ornamental).  Up here, the pay is much better than in the south and Union Halls are full and working well for the workers (plus they pay him to teach apprentices).  We are always thinking about heading south, but so worried that he won't be able to find work at a reasonable wage.  Keep your chin up!  smile

I feel for everyone.  It doesn't appear to be getting any better, and indeed could get much worse with this debt ceiling debate going on.  Good luck to everyone.  I wish all the best to you.
