Topic: Advice on song choice

Hey guys.

Joined this forum in search of some advice.

Basicly in a few months time I'm playing an acoustic cover with a friend of mine for a
talent show happenin at this camp I'm goin to. Only we're havin trouble deciding on a song to
play as I have to sing it aswell as play it. I'm not the best guitarist in the world so this causes
some problems so if anyone can advise me on somethig that I can play and sing relativly easily
it would be much apreciated.

Thanks

Hi mr a, nice too see you at the site, you should check out the public songbooks here at chordie there are songs for beginners in there. You might also try some music from creedence clearwater, buddy holly,Bob dylan, and nieil diamond, they are all pretty easy to play and well known, alot of beatle songs are easy also, Good luck and have fun!!

Re: Advice on song choice

Me and my friend have talked and we're thinkin either 'Paint it black' or 'Let it be'. What would you guys pick if the choice was there?

Re: Advice on song choice

As Dino48 stated above, check out CCR - Who'll Stop the Rain. Nice easy song to play and sing.

And welcome to chordie.

Re: Advice on song choice

Well they're both iconic songs that evoke the originators when played.  Given that, would you rather emulate the Stones or the Beatles?  Or, (and this is what I would do but I'm not saying it's what you should do), are you going to mix up the arrangement and make the song your own?  If you do that, I think it would be easier and more effective to do that with Let It Be as that song has been covered by any number of artists in any number of styles.

Re: Advice on song choice

ok so I've been away for a while and my playing has improved somewhat. To the degree where I was thinking of covering FFDPs Far from home its relativly easy to play compared to the other songs by them and it should lend itself well to acoustic playing. also it works better with my voice. Thanking everyone who posted for their suggestions though your feedback is much appreciated.

Re: Advice on song choice

Let it be is a great song, if you have a fairly high voice.  If not then the Stones would be better.

You can see all my video covers on http://www.youtube.com/bensonp1000
I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Re: Advice on song choice

Mr_Apocalypse, I like your choice if your friend can cover his harmony lines.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

Re: Advice on song choice

I'm a little late here... but welcome to chordie and the forums!  Good luck to you and your friend!

Re: Advice on song choice

If I may: The easiest songs I have found to play, as long as you do not need the lead, are Pink Floyd's "Mother" (the easiest) and "Brain Damage".  Mother is easier than Brain damage as there is no picking. The song is G, C, D, and F. The tab can be found here and can be learned within hours. Hardest part is going from C to F in the chorus but once you can work that out, which will take the most practice, you should be fine. Listen or watch the song on you tube, the concert footage from the Wall tour stays alot on Waters and lets you wee the tempo he uses and the strumming patterns. Use it as a beginning and change it to your liking

Brain Damage is a tad bit more complex but can also be learned in hours.

Just saying....

Re: Advice on song choice

norweigian wood is an easy one by the beatles, you can't always get what you want or wild horses are a couple of easy ones by the stones.
