Topic: Playing to my OWN age

Today as I got back on my practice schedule I spent some time on the Internet looking for some new songs.  I discovered George Jones.  I'm a country music fan and I like old time country.  What I didn't realize is that many of Georges songs are very slow and easy to sing and play.  In less than 30 minutes I was playing "He Stopped Loving Her Today."  It's a G, C, D, D7, G7 song. These are all chords that I know.  The great part for me is George sings this song real slow.  I'm not sure of the strum pattern so I just made one up that sounds good to me.  Well I didn't stop there.  I also found "A Few Good Ole Country Boys Around"  This is by George and Randy Travis.  Again in 30 minutes I was playing this song.  It was like a light bulb went off and I realized that I'm 63 years old.  I need to look for songs by singers in the same age group that I'm in.  Old farts like me aren't supposed to sound like Brad Pasley or Keith Urban.  When I can play two songs well in one hour of practice, I'm going to stick with it.  Maybe Chordie could add a new song group called the "Senior Citizen" group or something.

Thanks Brad for the tip. I have also bookmarked this site. I love the old country tunes but unlike Tony I am not 63. I am just 62.

Re: Playing to my OWN age

I appreciate you guys embracing music from our bygone days. I'm 69 and have been playing music since high school.
The above approach works fine if your audience is old duffers like we are. If we plan to play for a younger or mixed age group, we better be prepared to "get it on".
We may have snow on the roof but there is still fire in the furnace and junk in the trunk. smile We must never forget how satisfying and fun it is to rock out. Yes, we can relate to and play oldies but as our abilities permit we can afford to be generous enough to include music for younger audience members.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".

That's how to do it!  Right on Tony, right on!  I'm just shy of 20 years younger than you, and I love those songs too.  I work with a gal who is about 15 years younger than me, and she loves that kind of music too.  Age has got nothing to do with it.  Good music is good music, and those two songs are good music!  (especially that second one, you've inspired me to go look it up myself)

Re: Playing to my OWN age

Well, I'm getting perty close to the 60 year old mark and I done figured I'm kinda outta luck with them hot young female groupies. Then I got to thinking - there a whole lotta "Blue haired" ladies that grew up on what ya'll are calling "Old Country" music. All ya gotta do is play them something nice and slow - being sure to do all the STRUMMIN' right and, Oh Boy - do they appreaciate what you done did for them. What dem wimmens will do for a good ole George Jones song and a smile.

Re: Playing to my OWN age

This thread reminds me of an interview I once heard with Johnny Cash.  Of the 1950's class of country stars, Johnny Cash said, "If any of us could sound the way we wanted, we'd all sound like George Jones."
