Topic: New to this...

Hi to the guitar world!

So this past weekend I finally got a guitar and decided to start playing, my girlfriend (and her brother and dad) play guitar and when they start I usually just sit there and listen. You know gawking at the whole thing (just some useless background info). I would just like to know what some real easy basic songs are to start on? Any song suggestions will be appreciated.

I’m not looking to play only one specific genre of songs, any type, old or new…

I got my 1st real six string, bought it at the 5 and dine
Played it till my fingers bled, was the summer of 69

I love those lines!

Re: New to this...

First off welcome to Chordie!
I'd suggest clicking on "Public Songbooks" above the index line. You'll see all kinds of song categories including easy songs.
You are a step ahead of a lot of us by having a family of players to draw from and play with. I wish you well in your learning.  Al

Tom Dulley is one
Amanda by Waylon or Don Milliams is another.
I saw the light another.

Re: New to this...

There's a thread in Chat Corner on a similar subject.  www.justinguitar.com gets a lot of votes for being an excellent resource for beginners.  For songs, check out the "songbooks" tab on Chordie and search on Beginner or Absolute Beginner.  You'll find some good ones.

I think Jambalaya by Hank Williams has gotten more guitar players started than just about any song.  Plus, it's a good song that is fun to play and sing.

Re: New to this...

Welcome to Chordie Juan.

http://www.ezfolk.com/uke/Tutorials/1fo … chart.html

Use this chart and look at the three chords in gray.  Learn any of these three and you can just improvise when the song they're playing is in this key.  Ask them what key they are playing and you'll know what three chords goes along with the song.  Many songs only use these three.

key of A: A D E
key of C: C F G
key of D: D G A
key of G: G C D

These chords follow the usual progression of 1 4 5 where 1 is the 1st key in the scale, and 4 or 5 is the 4th and 5th note in the scale.
So for Key of A, you may not can play Bm or C#m but you can hang with them when they are hitting the A, D and E chords.

As you progress, you'll find the Em, Am, and eventually the Bm and F#m can be learned.  Hope you'll find yourself playing along mostly on some of their songs and in your practice time on your own you'll find many easy songs that only use the 1,4,5 chords anyway.

Tell us how it's going as you progress...and good luck!

Steve

Hi and welcome to Chordie!! If you go to the top of the acoustic section here you'll see a green sticky for strumming patterns that are very helpful. Los of luck and welcome to a GREAT adventure!!!
