Topic: My Fingers!

I've been practicing my chords and some simple songs almost all the time now and it's really taking a toll on my finger tips. I was just wondering how long does it take for your fingers to toughen up? It's getting to the point where I'm getting blisters. I just wanted to let the world of chordie know that, Shay4's fingers hurt really bad. (:

Re: My Fingers!

Just a normal obstacle in the path of great guitar players.  It willget better.  You might go a day or so in between playing for awhile.  They will turn into hard fingertips over a short time.  Just keep at it.  And welcome to Chordie.  No pain, no gain.

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Re: My Fingers!

Well, it differs depending on the person, but you can figure on a month or two.  There are a bunch of folk remedies, but mostly you've got to tough it out with the knowledge that every single one of us and every guitar player you've ever seen, heard, or known has gone through it.  Stick with it, the payoff is worth the pain.

Re: My Fingers!

Thanks guys. (: I'm not going to give up so easily. I was just complaining. I really like playing the guitar, I'm really happy I got into it. Just  out of curiosity, what was the first song you ever played?

Re: My Fingers!

In my case - "Forever and Ever Amen" by Randy Travis.  That's the first song on guitar anyway.  I do not recall the first song ever.

A good vinegar soak helps.

Re: My Fingers!

If no one has said it yet, Welcome Shay!!!!

You're actually getting blisters on your tips? Never heard of that. Maybe ease off a little like Ben said. You want tough fingers not injured fingers. It will get better and more fun.

Keep Rockin!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: My Fingers!

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and the advice. (:

Zguitar, your post made me smile. I want tough fingers not broken ones, got it. I wish I could not just play for a day or so, but I'm taking the class in high school, so I have to play a little bit everyday.

I've heard that putting super glue on the tips of your fingers help. Of course you let it dry then play. People say it helps with sensitive fingers as well.

Re: My Fingers!

hi shay4 welcome to chordie,i've been playing off and on for 20yrs+,i'm still a amateur but enjoy doing it,i get wails across my finger tips even now but they do harden after a while,i do manual work so my hands toughened up sooner, but if you play for long periods you can still feel the sore tips so its a matter of ignoring the pain to achieve your goal, enjoy it.....stay cool

love is life ,life is for love, keep a true heart and live life to the full....stay cool

Re: My Fingers!

Super glue on the ends helps lots, just dont pick it off, let it fall off after.

Re: My Fingers!

Hi shey4,i remeber it took me a couple of months to get hard fingertips playing almost daily at least one half hour. If you use superglue, you can remove it with a cooking oil or soaftsoap. My first song was "what I say" buy the late Ray Charles. Also you might want to avoid Washing Dishes!!! I know you will miss that!
