Topic: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

All, my friend Jeff Kelble is the Shenandoah Riverkeeper.  He has a large event, usually in June, to raise money and membership.  Shenandoah Riverkeeper is a subset of the Potomac Riverkeeper and is associated with the Riverkeepers Alliance.  It's a terrific and effective organization that uses membership to show that the individual riverkeepers have a lot of grass-roots (read: potentially effective voting bloc) support.  However, most of the work Jeff is doing is not political.  He's doing a lot of raising awareness with politicians (sure, you can't avoid them), but also residential developers, residents, farmers, industry, etc.  He is not afraid of using the courts and has done so effectively, but prefers the direct approach and has been very effective at it.

Now, I say that so that people will be comfortable attending his event to raise money and membership.  The event is usually held on a Saturday, and because there is free-flowing beer and wine it is held at a campground.  The event cost is usually about $40 for Saturday and to get an extra stay at the campground on Friday night is $8.  That's roughly the same cost as renting a site at the campground for two days but it also gets you a huge meal made by award winning bar-be-que caterers, a lot of like-minded/cool people to hang out with, and extremely liberal enforcement of the rules.  Plus the Shenandoah is a great river and I'll teach anyone to canoe who would like to come and give it a try.  I'll also make my plastic armada available to keep down rental costs.

I don't have the particular weekend yet, but have sent a note to Jeff asking him to let me know as soon as possible because I know folks may need to put in their vacation requests soon.

The campground name is Lowwater Bridge Campground.  It's in Bentonville, Virginia. You can Google map it with this address: 192 Panhandle Road
Bentonville, VA 22610.

Check it out.  I know it's Virginia, but just barely and its only a few miles off a main road (but over a ridge, so you can't hear the noise at all).  So folks from Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, western North Carolina, etc. all ought to take a look and see whether this is within your realm of feasible weekend trip.

I'll post the details of Jeff's event in this thread when I have them.  So I may need to "bump" this a time or two between now and then.

Re: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

Count me in! As long as we get to play guitar, I'm in.
I don't ask for much through the year so I don't think the wife would begrudge me attending this event.
In fact...I'll start saving change up right now so she can't say we don't have the money either.

We'll talk more when the details are posted.

thanks!!

Re: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

As this is about 3 hours closer to home, it's more likely that we might attend this one rather than the other... assuming it doesn't fall within the weekend of some Biker or tattoo event the hubster is planning to attend.  Keep us posted!  smile

Re: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

As soon as I have a date, I'll let you know.  If floats around year to year based on a number of variables.  Last year it was in mid-July.  It has been in mid-June, and just about every weekend in between.  So just keep your eyes peeled.

If there's enough interest, I identified a group camping location in Pennsylvania at Raystown Lake.  There's a huge campground there managed by the Army Corps of Engineers.  I don't think I'll be able to pull off an event there this year, but perhaps in a future year.  The group campsite comes with a huge pavilion with electricity and a huge fireplace at one end.  It might be fun to get that and push some picnic tables together for a stage and do an open mic thing.  Or not.  I'm getting ahead of myself.  Anywaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, we'll see how these first two events go and consider others for the future.  I like the idea of the big group camping thing because there's a big lake for swimming and boating and fishing, and there's playgrounds, and trails, and hot showers, and all sorts of fun things to do.  Well, I guess hot showers aren't exactly FUN.  I'd love to have one that's family friendly where kids and grandparents and everyone can come and have a good time.

Re: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

ahhh... July might be even more doable for us than June, so I'm glad to hear that.  You had me going there for a group camping experience in PA... sounds good, but that's for another time.  LOL!  And um, hot showers can be "fun" if you save water and... errr... never mind.  wink

Sounds like a blast, hopefully things will improve for me by then as Virginia is a piece of country I've always wanted to visit. With the bonus of jamming with Chordie friends it'll be worth the trip.

KAP54 -

If you make it this far, I'll be sure to carve out some time to show you some pretty country either by truck, foot or canoe (your choice).  There's the Blue Ridge Parkway for a gorgeous drive, terrific hiking in national forests and along the Appalachian Trail, and also the Shenandoah River itself.  I don't recall the tribe that gave the Shenandoah its name, but it means "Daughter of the Stars".  It's just that pretty.

For folks who are into Civil War history, the campground is roughly twenty miles from Winchester, Virginia.  Winchester changed hands in the Civil War more than any other city.  It was critical because it's on a pass through the Blue Ridge and also because rifles were manufactured there.  Harper's Ferry is also within a reasonable drive.  It's not only beautiful to see, but ripe with history as the location of the armory that outfitted the Lewis & Clark expedition, which is the same armory that played a later role in national history when John Brown attacked it trying to arm his band of abolitionists.

Re: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

Sounds great Zurf! I plan on attending and I may lengthen my stay to a week or so to coordinate some more events smile

By chance do you know any public 4x trails that are close by?  I'm currently putting a new lift on my '93 xj (along with some more mods) and would love to do some trail riding while I'm in that area smile I know of a couple of national parks fairly close by that have great orv programs but thought you may know of a few less popular trails I'm not aware of being so familiar with the area....

Re: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

Sorry pix.  I've got a 4x4, but mine is meant to get me to unimproved canoe launches and up little goat paths leading to trout streams.  I haven't done any "4x4" trails with it.  I'll ask around a little and see what I can find out before July.

Checked my 2011 shift calendar and I'm off work July 15-20.  If "She who must be obeyed"  doesn't have plans, I may be heading east with yaks on roof and guitar and camping gear in back of the Subaru.

Re: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

Cool DE.  It's a good time with lots of folks you know.  If you come, you'll have fun.  The fishing on the Shenandoah is doing a lot better. It's surely not recovered to its former glory, but all those five and six year old fish that the kills didn't get have had the opportunity to eat as much as they like without competition from the 'big guys', and now they are the big guys.  You won't catch any trophies, but the opportunity at catching a bunch of 13" -15" footballs with broad shoulders is there.

Re: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

Bump.  There's been some recent discussions.  Here's hoping folks can make it out.  There's professional music usually on the night with the barbeque.   I talked to Jeff Kelble and he's excited about some campfire tunage on off nights or after the pro music.

Re: June(ish) Jam in Bentonville, Virginia

To Guitarpix - It seems that there aren't many open-to-the-public 4x4 trails that I've been able to find.  I was able to find evidence of some clubs in Northern Virginia, and also there are some public trails in the National Forests.

I suspect that if the 4x4 community is anything like the river community, that if you get on a forum for Northern Virginia (NOVA) and explain your situation you'll have a number of invitations.  The campground is in the Shenandoah Valley, so search for NOVA and Shenandoah Valley and ShenVal.  Some towns are Luray, Winchester, Bentonville, and if you're up for a little further drive Harrisonburg.
