Topic: Nashville numbers

Hi Roger,

Chordie is a great web site. Thanks for creating it.

Have you ever thought about trying to get the transposeoption to transpose to Nashville numbers, rather than particular chords? I guess the hard bit would be deciding where the root chord was in the song though.

Best regards
Alan

Hi teledelux, good to see you on the site,I agree it is great and I think the best on the web. I am not techie enough to do what you are talking about but one of our fearless leaders ( moderators) will be around soon to answer your question/suggestion.

Re: Nashville numbers

Teledeluxe, that is a most useful suggestion. I wish I had learned "Nashville Notation" years earlier. It is a great shortcut for any guitarist.
I attended a Nashville recording session with nine musicians - some who met for the first time. The session leader jotted the chord progression on the back of a small matchbox and showed it around to everyone briefly.
The group then nailed the recording in only one take.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

Re: Nashville numbers

I imagine that our fearless leader, Per (aka Admin) has taken note of the suggestion and will consider it in his updates.  I don't know anything about the Nashville number system (although when I get some spare time I have a feeling I will be doing a little research myself).  I do know that Per is a pretty busy guy with Chordie being more of a hobby for him than much else... but perhaps he will consider it if there is enough request for it!  smile  WELCOME to Chordie Teledluxe!

Re: Nashville numbers

just a hunch is it calling each chord by the number of the chord in the scale? like I 4 5 6 (C F G Am)? I googled up Nashville number system and its the same. When I played in Vegas we used this system all the time on new songs I would call out the changes by numbers it is a very quick and easy system to communicate the chord changes even if you have never played the song before a little theory cant hurt smile

You're right Russell about a little theory not hurting, and I need to add that to my list of things to practice.  It's about  time for me to delve deeper into theory!  wink

Re: Nashville numbers

Amy I remember when I first started learning theory before I used to think it was a waste of time because I was a rock n roller then and only played in 5 keys at best never messed with flats or sharps or even Maj 7ths after a year or so of hitting the books things started making sense and scales vastly improved my speed and precision and creativity its well worth the investment of time to study theory smile

Re: Nashville numbers

I like the Nashville system as an expedient way to transpose from key to key.  I find most players I know though, don't know what it is except that they've heard of it.    Plus, the ones that do, don't seem to agree on the use of minors where theory says they should go.  I'm not that good at it, mostly because I don't use it as far as jamming.   I understand it though, mostly....;)
