Hello to all in Chordie land!!!!
Quick question about tuners. I will need to replace a set on one of my acoustics sooner or later. I have a very cool set on my newer Yamaha that click every so often like they're locking. Anyone know about this and what brands are the same. They are original to my Yamaha but I don't know what brand they are.
Never heard of them...but I definitely love my Schaller Locking tuners.

Ouch!!!!! Schallers are expensive. As looked at all 3 of my guitars I noticed that on the one that needs tuners, the tuners are not attached with a little screw like the other 2. I e-mailed Art & Lutherie to find out what brand of tuners were original. Unless Pix knows what they are. I didn't see any Grover or Gotoh that weren't attached with screws.
Schallars are fantastic tuners. I have only bought them twice but they were worth the price.

That's straight form Godin guitars. Wow I thought they would use a quality tuner. So much for that.
I can't find ANY heads that don't require a screw to attach to the headstock. Very weird.
Any ideas?
Sperzel machines don't use a screw mount, but they are a locking type tuner that might fit your guitar. It is wise to check the specs to make sure they will fit without having to do any woodwork etc.
They are a high quality machine and not inexpensive at around $60 a set from StewMac.

I guess that's why the tuners on my Art and Lutherie (Godin) are so mediocre. I've been thinking of replacing mine, too.
Some makes of tuning machines will have a small pin cast into the machine body to prevent it from spinning under full string tension.
On your next string change, loosen the nut on the top of the post and gently push the machine off the headstock. There will be one or two small posts if that is the case. If they are like the ones I've seen, it will be hard to find a dead on replacement short of contacting the Korean mfg directly to see if they make an upgraded version.
If you go that route, try to find out who distributes them in your country of residence - if at all.
Grovers, Schallers, Sperzels (who make several that use the cast pin style) and Gotoh are all quality but the same overseas mfg who makes the ones on your guitar probably make knock-offs of these makers so you might see what style you have and go from there.
I'm looking at getting my dad Grover tuning heads for his bass and I saw they make different Gear ratios.
