Justin Sandercoe interviews Steve Vai. Steve is a really cool guy. He knows where he comes from and where he's going. He IS music incarnated as a man. I can't imagine how much stuff this guy knows. Awesome and inspiring to hear him talk about his love of music.


On the same note... What makes people awe at the likes of Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Gary Hoey and other guitar "gods"? All of them shred, and that in itself is amazing. But is it really that hard and that impressive? Is it just so fast and flashy that makes people think they're awesome? I think banjo players are impressive. I don't like that type of music, but those guys rock. One of the most impressive guitar recordings I've heard is Steve Stevens playing Rebel Yell acoustically. It's on the Billy Idol Greatest hits album.

Now that is a really good question. Personally, while I can appreciate the talent that goes with playing fast I'm done after listening to somebody shredding after about 5 minutes. I'd much rather listen to someone playing with feeling and there are players who are fast who can do that, Gary Moore and Albert Lee to name two.

I'm not a huge fan of shredding if there's no musicality to it.  I hear tons of folks shredding at Guitar Center.  The notes are in the right order and all, but there's no heart to it.  No musicality.  But when you hear Steve Vai or Yngwei Malmsteen there's heart in it.  I think it's the same thing as being easy to play blues music, but it's a rare person who can play "the blues." 

I think Mozart would have appreciated Yngwie Malsteen.

I agree with you both. Heart and soul is what makes music. Notes on a page don't bring anything to life. Without talent music would not move us. Reminds me of a couple things....

I think it was a post here, about a music project around the world. Getting diff people to play Stand by Me in their own way. The little old guy from Louisiana I think was awesome. Gandpa Elliott was his name. Old and road worn but had soul coming out of his ears!!

Another is a little song from Alanis Morrisette from her Jagged Little Pill. It's the hidden track, "Your House". No music at all, but man you can feel the heart she puts into this song. Very cool to listen too.
