Guitar chord forum - chordie → Acoustic → guitar polish
I have never applied polish to an acoustic guitar before, and I'm looking to find the best and easiest to use. I also have no Idea how often to do this. I love my guitar and do not want to make any misstakes in this prosses.Please help. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_redface.gif" border=0 alt="Embarassed">

use luthier's choice ' string lubricant' and 'neck oil' by gibson....and use it and it helps alot...it shines ur guitar in a jiffy....

Please, whatever you do, DO NOT use Pledge or any kind of furniture polish! Go to a reputable music store, and get the polish made for wooden instruments. You shouldn't need to polish your guitar often but once a month. Also, get yourself a nice microfiber cloth to wipe off your baby when you're done playing. I normally wipe my strings and the wood surface after each play. It helps remove the salt and grease from your hands and fingers.
Another thing you should invest in is a humidifier! If you live in a low humidity area, this is a must!

well, I use MR sheen furniture polish about once every 6 months.
I dont believe in rubbing a guitar down and keeping it looking good, I like a worn out old guitar that still plays well.
If it gets bit dirty thru puke, food, drink spillages, etc, thats when Mr sheen comes out. 
As for the strings, I never clean mine unless I am really bored, and I mean really bored.
I buy new strings so I dont see the need to keep cleaning old ones.
But, if I was making money from playing then I might invest in a poper guitar cleaner, but for all those that are like me I would bother.
and another way I would pay for a proper cleaner s if I spent over £725.99 on a guitar.
So until the day that I do, it will be Mr Sheen, it really does smell nice!!!

I use a product called G H S guitar gloss. Cleans and shines real nice. Use it every couple months. Like Ken I dont do the strings just change them when sound is flat. You learn quickly not to bang or bump your guitar, I did.

GHS guitar gloss, it don't cloud up and does not contain silicone. Also I use lizzard spit to oil my fret boards. I also polish my guitars more frequently than badeye

Great to know Bootlegger, thought it was the best of three I looked at. Not heard of Lizzard Spit but will look next time Im music store. Tried "Fast Fret" to reduce noise.other than that its just trying to get the strum down and its all good.

Just like you said a brand name, I have 13 guitars right now, (10 electric, 3 acoustic. I sold a strat a month a go) and I am planning to check out a Michael Kelly Valor tomorrow (it is between that and a Michael Kelly Patriot series) and make a purchase in about three weeks. It is cheaper for me to buy a guitar in those styles than make one after the matierials cost and my labor. So a long story short I would need a whole lot of lizzards for all them fret boards.

Here is a copy of what I wrote in reply to someone asking about humidifiers. I believe that it also applies here.
O.K. so here's the deal as an "old timer" sees it. I play a Norman B20 with a spruce top and cherry sides and back. I have owned this guitar for 15 years.I try to practice about an hour a day,so it does get plenty of playing. I keep it in a solid case with a little silica bag to absorbe moisture. I clean my strings and fingerboard with "Fast Fret", I pass a dry rag on it to dust it off every so often. And that's it! My guitar keeps sounding better as the years pass. It is ageing just as I like.
My concern is this. I am fairly new to this site.... I really love this site and the interaction with other musicians.... but I can't help feeling that many people are spending so much time fretting ( pun intended ) over all the latest equipment that manufactuers are telling us that we need. Unless you live in a very dry or extreemly humid enviroment I do not see the need for such a gadget. Also if you do live in such an enviroment wouldn't your home already have either a humidifier or dehumidifier. Doesn't your guitar share the same enviroment? I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Our tempuratures vary from +30 and very humid in the summers to -30 and very dry in the winters.I have never felt a need to worry about my guitar.
So are all these gadgets nessesary or are we products of our commercial enviroment?

#1 A Guild F45-CE Made in 1984 (original Owner) when Guild still owned the company.
#2 A thin body Alvarez Yari also purchased in 1985 again original owner, It has a rosewood back & sides with a spruce top.
#3 An old Silvertone F-hole guitar purchased at a swapmeet (flea market) for $25.00 american and I also Got a Sekio watch that was left in the case. (Found it when I got home other wise I would have gave it back)
Both the Guild & the Alvarez have acoustic pickups for amplification.
As far as your second purchase, it all boils down to what you like.
All the major brands make a good acoustic and some of them come out dogs. You have to play alot of them to find the tone and the neck that your confortable with.
I personally like the sound of jumbo bodies they project sound more since they have a larger sound chamber. Go play alot and when you narrowed it down to the top five go play them again and pick the one your comfortable with. One more thing have someone else also play your top five so you could hear a different style and or level of guitarist playing the guitar . You'll hear the tone in a different light and that's what people listing to you play hear.
