Well South Carolina just threw a huge spanner in the works, didn't they?
Well Wisconsin just tossed a huge spanner in the other works.
How did Oklahoma jump Oregon, though?
Had a much better week this week. Bama won. Auburn is undefeated. The Saints went marching in all over 3-1 Tampa.
What a difference seven days can make.
My son's Cowboys are losing despite mucho talent.
I sense a coaching change - but when?
Cam, sorry about your Blue Devils.
Surprised that the cowboys are losingso much, they were really favored to be a big threat this year. My team finally got a win today ( sf 49ers ).
Thanks Tuba, I appreciate that, I've learned to not get to up or down where Duke's football program is concered, as you may know were much more of a basketball school. As far as the Dallas cowboys are concered I'm not sure why everyone expects big things from them. Going into last year it had been 4.000 and some days before they won a playoff game, then last year they finally won one. I think it's time for everyone to put Dallas in the higher end of the lower echelon of teams where they belong IMHO If it were anyone else I think we all would have long ago. I don't know if it's the Coaches, the players or simply just Jerry Jones who hurts this team, they seem to lean toward players who have so many off the field problems who are flashy but have no substance. Jerry seems to like the camera's and the media on him rather than his team, again just my thoughts, it dosen't make them right or wrong.

Hi Cam; I think you hit the nail on the head. A lot of people look at bad teams in any sports and immediately think of the coaches or players as the problem. Jerry Jones is too hands on, self absorbed and needs to get people who are not sycophants. Good football people. Look at the sports teams that are successful, and you can generally find that they are owned by people who hire good people to run the teams. The Patriots are a case in point. Bob Kraft took it over, hired good management, learned to step back and let them RUN the team. Of course what happens then is that successful franchises get raided by other teams to be successful as well. Look at the Kansas City Chiefs, hired good coach and staff, got a good GM and they are turning things around. Look at the Oakland Raiders, yeah they are doing ok in a way, but, they can't get past Al Davis's EGO. Jerry Jones needs to get back in the owner's box and stop looking over the coaches shoulder. The game has changed from the days of Tom Landry.
Consistently Bad or mediocre teams are run by bad owners, for the most part. Patriots had lousy owners for a long time, they in turn hired lousy Gm's and coach's. They would have a flash or two of success, but, then go bad.
I hope that makes sense!
Makes great sense Ozy, I competely agree with you, I really believe Jerry Jones is the biggest problem the Cowboys have, as well as Al Davis for Oakland. It's time Jerry and Al let go and sell the teams.
On a different note about football as well as other Major sports is that I believe there are to many teams, the talent is to spread out, to many guys playing on that level that don't belong there, thus a watered down version, if you keep adding water to gasoline it becomes to diluted. I wish they would cut down on the number of teams, concentrate the talent into a smaller pool and make for more talented teams, yes I know it's about the money, I understand that so it's not going to happen. But this is how I feel, anyone else have any feelings about this?
Cam
My favorite NFL teams are the SadHawks, and whoever plays Dallas this week, so I can't believe I'm going to defend Jerry Jones. He did bring three SuperBowl championships to the team, and thats no small feat. He might be a bit of a git, but he knows how to put together a winning team. The Cowboys under Jones have been consistently anywhere from a pretty good team to championship caliber. One bad year is the anomaly. Jone's history says if it is a bad season or two, he will get it fixed.
Jerome, thats a good point you make, they have in fact won those Championships under Jerry's owership, but there's also no denying he is meddlesome in the day to day operations of the team, one might wonder how much more successful they might have been if he would stay up in the booth, maybe more, maybe not, I guess we'll never know for sure. I realize it's his team, his money, but I just feel that you hire the right people"football people" and let them do their job.

Agreed and small market teams just cannot compete, no matter how much money the big markets pay in "luxury tax" or "salary caps". My thoughts dwell on Florida, do they really need or can they support, 3 teams??? Jacksonville is a small market, I often wondered how they would fare in a city like Oklahoma City. They would probably sell out every game and not compete as much for fans. Oklahoma state would be happy to have a pro football team. Look what they have done since they got pro-basketball.
Don't get me started on hockey. Now there's a sport that could use some shrinking of teams or at least move a few back to Canada.

You do make a good point. But, the days of Cowboy dominance are over. He's not the brilliant owner that he used to be. They'll be competitive, but, the game has changed since those dynasty teams. He does need to start scaling back and hire people who can make better assessments of talent and character. Tony Romo is not a great quarterback, Tom Brady, who was a 6th round pick is a great quarterback. He makes stuff happen and people around him better. Somebody knew what they were doing when they scouted and got him. They'll be a good tough team for awhile, but, they need a "spark" to get them to the next level.
Jerry Jones is brilliant, but he seems several steps behind other owners and managers.
I'm hearing through the grapevine that Bill Cowher will be the next coach at Dallas, actually thats whats hinted at on ESPN but you have to subcribe to that reporters page to read it, I did'nt do that.

I heard that as well, but, his family is on the east coast and he wants to stay close to his family. Especially since his wife died from cancer not that long ago. I can't see why he would put up with Jerry Jones's ego and the pressure cooker of coaching; "America's Team".
This thread is what makes it great being a Cowboys fan - The last 10 posts either mentioned or were directly about the Cowboys, all from self avowed Cowboy haters. The Cowboys are a team that everybody has an opinion about - love or hate. They are like the Yankees of Football. How many other teams fuel that kind of passion? The Seahawks have never meant anything to anybody, totally irrelevant in the scheme of things - the 49ers? - once a contender, now a cute team with a passionate, well liked coach - no more. The Pats - Forever a dog despite recent success with a not so honest coach. Brady was a great find in the 6th round, but don't forget - Romo was a undrafted rookie free agent - still unproven, but a good find nonetheless.
And the Jerry Jones talk is and always has been total BS - what other business does an owner make a multi-million or hundreds of million dollar investment then expect to stay "hands off"? - Not in any company I have ever worked for that's for sure. If it were my $, I'd want to be involved also. Jerry has had much more success than almost every owner, so that argument is beyond defeated.
With all that said, this years Cowboys team is the most talented, undercoached team I have ever witnessed in 35+ years of being a Cowboys fan. That said, the NFC East is unusually weak this year and it ain't over yet.

The Pats are dogs? Come on man.....They were the dominant team of the decade. They were way more dominant than the Cowboys of the 90's. You can't say they are forever dogs. The Cowboys have remained insignificant since Jimmy Johnson left (though they snuck one in with the same personnel under Switzer).
And furthermore, I don't hate Dallas...I really don't. I always thought Troy Aikman was a great player; a total package. BUT Here's the thing...and listen close Dallas fans:
Tony Romo is a mediocre quarterback. I don't hate him but he is not good. He doesn't understand the game the way the great ones do. He's got about 2 more years before they give up on him. He just doesn't have it. I've watched him play...he's just middle of the pack.
You can blame Wade Phillips or even Jason Garrett (and Jones will shit can both of them) but no amount of coaching will make Tony Romo a good quarterback...sorry he just doesn't have it.
That team is dripping with talent and their goal is to be 8 and 8....they are a giant dissappointment.
And the Seahawks will finish with a better record...At least they look like they are trying.

I was speaking more in a historical context - before the recent success of the Pats, they were little better than also-rans for decades. I absolutely respect Brady and their recent accomplishments, despite costing me a bunch of $ on the loss to the Giants in '08. But come on man - The 'Boys have been in the playoffs 30 times, Div Champs 21 times, and are 5-3 in the big one. Compare that to the Pats 16 appearances, 11 championships and 3-3 SB record, and I will argue that as a franchise, Dallas is twice as successful, despite your longer history.
I agree re: Romo - He still has to prove himself as a SB caliber QB - however I contend he has the raw talent and with the right coaching, he could win one. There have certainly been worse QB's who have won rings in the past.
For the record, I am not a cowboy hater, I just got sick and tired of the term, "America's team". And the never ending drama and marketing of Cowboy Nation. Jerry Jones is a brilliant business man, no doubts. He got the city to foot the bill for his "Taj Mahal" stadium. Whereas the Krafts footed most of the bill to construct the New stadium for the Patriots. Seriously, They had a glorious run for a long time, and are still a dangerous team..........and could be considered a top rung team even now..........if they ever got a good coach.
And as for honesty in coaching, puhleeeeeeeeeeeeze, Belichik is no less honest or more honest then any other coach in NFL history. He just got caught. He is not a likeable guy, never has been, never will be.
As for Jerry Jones, he got two good runs of success, after firing Tom Landry. And he's been thru a lot of coaches since. Consider the Pittsburgh Steelers, 6 titles in their history and very few coaching changes. They must be doing something right.
As for Tony Romo, he's a decent quarterback for an undrafted free agent. With a good coach and a strong coach, he might even be a great one. But, right now he looks more like Matt Leinart, then Tom Brady.

You might want to check your figures. From I've read, the city of Arlington provided roughly $325 million of financing (plus interest). This is a relatively small percentage of the $1.3 billion cost of the stadium. I'd say "most" of the cost was paid for JJ and the Cowboys.
As for the America's Team marketing - I can understand where other fans would be jealous - This actually began back in the Tex Schramm days, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, etc. The NFL as a whole would not be where it is today without it. But still, the Cowboy's are Americas Team, consistently lead the league in apparel sales are at $1.8B, are the most valuable franchise in the NFL.
edited to add "million"
See--- now this is fun, this is what it's all about, the guys talking football, thats half the fun of it, ribbing each other, talking trash, just having a good time with it. Topdown I don't hate the Cowboys either, nowhere near my favorite team but I don't hate them. I know they have a storied history but you always gotta look to the future to, there's no doubt their recent history has not been as kind to the Cowboys as years past. My 49ers history has been even worse as great as they once were they are merely a memory now from the days of Montanna, Rice, Young, Lott and so on yet I keep pulling for them no matter what as you do the Cowboys and as you should, no self respecting man ever gives up on their team. I hate to see ship jumpers, when the Panthers came to North Caroline so many people here took them as their team and let go of their old team, I've never understood that, they're not real fans in my opinion.
Stick with your Cowboys Tops, I'll stick with my Niners, everyone else stick to your team and let the fun continue. We'll see who brings the Trophy home at the end of the season and they'll have braggin rights. As Jerome said though everyone pick your team now "speak up" not after it's won and stick to your guns as this is a man's game and if you go down, go down swinging.

Romo sucks - I agree - Let's compare QB rankings / ratings since Romo's first starting year to the haloed one:
Year Romo Brady
'06 5th / 95.1 9th / 87.9
'07 5th / 97.4 1st / 117.2
'08 8th / 91.4 injured
'09 8th / 97.6 9th / 96.2
Now - I'm a big believer that a great QB is judged by his rings, not his ratings (see Marino, Tarkenton, etc.), but come on, Romo is above mediocre. Granted, he is no Brady (yet), but Brady is special - not many like him in the NFL.

Agreed, I'll stick with the Patriots as well. If the PAtriots aren't in the super bowl, I tend to root for whatever team has never won it before. And I was very happy that New Orleans won the last one.
You guys are making sense.
IF I have no dog in the fight, I also root for the underdog.

Oh that's gonna cause me conflict. I'm a confirmed Cowboy hater, but I love Bill Cowher.
What to do, what to do?
I'm going at on a limb today and picking a possible upset. I'm going with Missouri to beat Okalahoma.
