Re: beginner songs

Hi stryker0010 & welcome to chordie!

Lots of friendly people here to help.  For some good starter songs, go the 'Public Books' and browse through the songbooks under the 'Absolute Beginner' category.  Lots of goodies in there.

Also, keep in mind that chordie can transpose - so if you find something with F, C, G or with E, A, D (or any 3-chord combo) you can bump it up or down into your preferred chords.  Just use the transposer gizmo on the right side of the page.

Nice to meet you,    James

Re: beginner songs

if you know G,C and D.. you already know hundreds of songs. This pattern is what the music theory teachers call a 1,4,5 pattern which is the foundation of rock and roll!

Re: beginner songs

Yeah that is what my instructor has been telling me but im having trouble mainly getting the rhythm of the strum down. Im assuming that  it will come with practice if there is anything i should be doing let me know

Re: beginner songs

Yes, practice, practice, practice.  Every day.  You'll notice the difference in a week or two.

Re: beginner songs

You can play Hotel Yorba by White stripes in that very pattern..

G+2+3+4+
C+2+3+4+
D+2+3+4+
G+2+3+4+

Rinse repeat.... Lyrics are easily found, and its one line to each Chord.

Re: beginner songs

Learn Am and you've got "Knocking on Heaven's Door".

Go to my public songbook on Country songs "Zurf's Country Songs" or something like that in the public songbook section.  Country has a lot of songs that are just three chords (thus my signature line).  If it's not in G, just use the transposing doohickey on the right side to make it into to G and save it to your own songbook.  I'm a beginner too, playing less than two years, and while I've got a few "stretch" songs in there, there's also a lot of songs you can play with those three chords.

Have fun, keep at it, good luck.

Re: beginner songs

stryker,

I have found that "Atlantic City" by Bruce Springsteen was a very helpful tune for me when I started out.  It does however include Em, in addition to the G, C and D, which I don't think should present you any challenges.

This was my first "goal" tune, ever since I saw Levon Helm open his "Midnight Ramble" with it.  The tune also aided in practicing the G to C chord change, wich I initially found awkward.

Enjoy!!!
