Re: Midnight Train by Darden Smith

I recommend you just write him. It's an older song of his and he might be able to help you out with a pointer or two. Go to dardensmith.com and let him know you're looking to learn how to play it. He's on MySpace as well. Good luck. By the way, I really love his song Satisfied...I can relate to that one.

Thanks Jets.  I gave it a shot, but here is what I got back:

"thanks for the inquiry.  you happened to pick one of the weirdest songs i've written.  structurally it's pretty easy, but there's no way i could even begin to tell you all the weird chords and voicings.
i would suggest getting someone who's good at figuring out songs off cds and have a crack at it that way.
make it your own.
once again, thanks for asking --
ds"

Guess I am going to have to try again the old fashioned way.  Who knows...maybe I'll learn something and actually become a better player!

Re: Midnight Train by Darden Smith

He's a pretty straight up guy and I missed the chance to see him a while back in the DC area. I'm hoping to get down to Austin where he performs regularly. One thing I saw in the video of Midnight Train that may help, I think he was playing with a capo on the 3rd fret. Best I can do but good luck.

Re: Midnight Train by Darden Smith

I was just watching the youtube video and playing around with it...Try CAPO 3 and start with a progression of these chords, while doing your standard funky variety hammer-ons in the middle of your chords. He does a little quick double muted F chord in the melody that repeats, too it sounds like.

032010 C "When the sun goes down
X20010 Cadd2/B "out on..."
002210 Am "my, side of"
003211 F "town..."

F "That's when I heard that"
320003 G "Midnight"
C "Train"

I think there might be a Dm7 and a G7 in there somewhere, but here's a start for you.

Also, you might to a web search on "chords in the key of C" which will give you some other ideas and let me know if you come up with something really close.
