Re: Help anyone - I'm Stuck!

Yeah. I know. But I couldn't resist it.

Please understand I was not demeaning your advice; infact I can only 100% agree with it. Scales are very important when learning any instrument.

I wholeheartedly apologise for any offence I may have caused.

But hey, these scales have such mad names i couldn't help myself. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_redface.gif" border=0 alt="Embarassed">

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: Help anyone - I'm Stuck!

I think all your opions were constructive, it all depends on your backround, one thing might be more important to one than to another, that's what makes us all unique musicians.  I really appreciate all your advice and now it all depends on how I use this advice to advance as a musician.  Thanks for all the help!!!!

Although not many people may find this interesting, I am posting a link to the Wikipedia article on modes.  It includes an explanation for all those seemingly bizarre names, as well as a nice introduction to their structure and how they may be utilized.

Re: Help anyone - I'm Stuck!

Guys n Gals!  I come on here quite often for probably the same reason that most of us do, that is to see how others approach problems that we face, to get good ideas on how to improve our technique, to get inspiration to go away and try and apply what we have seen or for those of us that are more skilled, to impart advice to those of us that are just starting out!  I appreciate all ideas and advice on here whether that be constructive or not!  I know I need to learn scales etc, but its all too easy to just pick up my geetar and strum along to some crap ... I'm thick skinned enough to realise that the occasional telling off and reminder of what I SHOULD be doing to improve is probably a good thing! (Please don't shout at me!)

Re: Help anyone - I'm Stuck!

( not shouting)

QUOTE" strum along to some crap"

I strum, I wouldnt say I strum along to crap, I may play crap sometimes though. And sometimes, very frequently I will finger pluck, but it always the same way.

I enjoy strumming, I enjoy trying to finger pluck so it sounds right, but I have never managed a full song sounding good never mind excellent.

I  am not very good at reading TAB, but can with a little struggle. I never try to play any lead guitar parts ( apart from sweet child of mine but never play the song) I dont have an electric guitar ( apart from my bass)

BUT........ I enjoy it.

I am not out to make money from my playing whether they be good or bad.

PLaying the guitar should be fun, is fun and should be taken as fun and not " eww, that was crap, can you not play that better" sort of way.

And now I have ranted so much here, I cannot remember what you said, lol. ( maybe I shold have stayed in bed to get extra sleep? 3 hours is not enough)

( dont take this too seriously)

Strumming is good

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: Help anyone - I'm Stuck!

Ken, Phew..I'm not feeling to bad after that ... was expecting much worse! hehehe!  I should have expressed myself better, by crap I meant my playing.  The same old strum patterns to the same songs with no concerted effort to push myself to develop as a player.  I don't suppose there would be much point in strumming to crap, kinda defeats the purpose eh!?  Yeah, I too love to fingerpluck, in fact just this week I learnt the pattern and progression to Clapton's 'Wonderful Tonight' which is probably one of my favourite songs of all time!  Would love to know if anyone knows where I can get the tab for the intro to that song?

Constructive criticism in the form of whispers most welcome!  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_rolleyes.gif" border=0 alt="Rolling Eyes">

Re: Help anyone - I'm Stuck!

Practice trick that actually helps - try "de-constructing" a song. By that I mean tear it down into its elements and re-arrange them. This can be very helpful in getting un-stuck from a rut.

For instance, play (or sing) every other chord (note) or play (sing)the chord progression (melody) backwards.  Play the chords (sing the tune) to a new rythmic pattern.

Mix it up . . . don't keep re-plowing the same rut the same way. Do anything you can to tear down your habitual idea of the song.

Try crazy stuff . . . Forget about how it sounds when somebody else plays it - forget about how it is 'supposed' to sound. Just focus on the elements of the song and play around with them like building blocks - stack them up in different ways, knock 'em down, and try it another way.

If nothing else, this practical practice technique will present you with some new techinical and creative challenges.  It can help get you un-stuck and can prevent you from getting re-stuck.
