Topic: chords

I was shown a way to convert songs from the chords they are in to G, C, D
for example if the song is played in A,D,E how do you go about changing them to the G,C,D
way?
I was told how to do it  but no longer remember how it is done.I know it has to do with counting the chords
A,B,C,D,E,F,G
if the song starts with A how do you count to make it a G ?

Re: chords

sorry forgot to state I am just learning the acoustic guitar I know the G,C,D chords.

Re: chords

you need to know what key you are in, and the associated scale for that key.

For your G C D example, that is in the key of G.

G major scale:

G A B C D E F# G

So G C and D are the I  IV  and V of that scale.

Now to transpose.

You want to play in A?

A major scale is

A B C# D E F# G# A

The I IV and V of A is

A  D   E

Scales are the root of all things in music.   It is worthwhile to know them,

Re: chords

i play G, C, F   / OR C,F,G,    F,C,G
        EM,A,D /        A,D,EM   D,A,EM

I USE G IN PLACE OF EM OR VISA VERSA
"  "    A  "     "        "  C   "      "        "
"  "    D  "    "        "   F   "      "         "
ALSO I SOMTIMES USE A7,D7,C7,G7,AM, DM,Bb in conjunction with the six major chords..

Re: chords

hi badboy,

Like Jerome says that is in the key of G,
Now if you want to know how to change it to the key of A then you can put a capo on the second fret and continue to play the G chord and C chord and D chord.
Puting a capo and playing these chords makes you in the scale of A without transposing chords.

Another way is to count the notes you are transpossing.

If you play an A chord instead of the G then you have transposed up 2 notes ( G#, A )

So, with you knowing you have went up two notes now you think of your C note and go up two, so the C becomes D ( C#, D)
your D becomes E.

Or without thinking about it if you go to a song in chordie, you can just use the transpose feature.

Chord *shapes* man!  Put that cappo on, and you're not playing G, C, or D any more.

Chord = notes coming out of the guitar.

Chord shapes = what you do with your hands.

Pedantry = What Jerome does regarding theory.  big_smile

Re: chords

yes Jerome you are correct. It is not really the chord G it is only the shape of the G chord when playing open, but I am sure he knew what I meant. ..... maybe???? perhaps?????? hope so.
but if not, then now he knows lol

You'd be surprised.  You tell someone "This is G" even when it isn't, and that will be G forever.

My bet is he's even more confused, which is good, because then he'll ask clarifying questions.  Sometimes you gotta stir the pot to get a stew.  big_smile
