Topic: Help with backpicking used in lots of reggae songs

I have been playing guitar for a while now, and recently have been experimenting with different ways of struming and picking, and one way that I am having particular troubles with is the backstrum used in alot of reggae songs (ie sublime, bob marley ext..)  Just wondering if anyone has any good advice on mastering this technique.  Thanks in advance for any help!

Just strum on the off-beat (2&4) and dampen during the on-beat (1&3).
That's how I emulate Sublime anyway...or any reggae pretty much.
