He touched on how the placement of pickups affects the tone of the string, as well as the point of the pick attack. This diagram makes it easy to visualize. Even though the rate of vibration is the same along the string (affects the pitch), the vibration width is what affects the tone. The pickup is going to capture that, which is why they sound different when mounted along various places on the string's length. It's cool stuff to wrap ones head around!
