Topic: Question About Tubes

I looked back several screens to see if this had ever been raised and couldn't find anything.

Are there any symptoms to listen for, when an amp's tubes are going? Or do they just quit? Is there anything I'd be able to look for just by giving them a visual check? Everything seems to be working okay in my Peavey, but it's just something I'd been wondering about. If it's any help, it has 3 - 12AX7's and 4 - 6L6GC's in it.

Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Question About Tubes

May want to move this to electric.

I generally hear a whine. They start to feed back really easily. They hiss, even when clean. They clip. And it gets worse as they get louder.

Re: Question About Tubes

Thanks BGD ... that's where I intended to post this, but got it wrong. Here's a pretty good article I found about tubes from Sweetwater's site:

Re: Question About Tubes

I'll move it over to Electric for you.

Re: Question About Tubes

if  you want to play with your tubes and like a less drivey sound try swapping out the 12ax7s for 12at7s. They are great.

Re: Question About Tubes

Good discussion, BG ... thanks for the link. I like the sound of my amp as is, so will stick with the 12AX7 and 6L6 combo when the time comes to replace them.
