Re: Iconic Guitars

Im also strugglng to pick a winnner, as a Les Paul player I'd like to think jimmy page's or slash's or like you says Les Paul's own but if someone asked me to think of a famous guitarist on the spot i think the first one to spring to mind would be Hendrix and his strat, theres so much choice you could even throw in Gene Simmons' axe bass, whether you like the music or not thats a guitar that stands out.

Re: Iconic Guitars

I'm going to go with Steve Howe's Gibson ES-175:

Not only did Steve's virtuosity stand out on this instrument, but the fact that he was primarily using a hollow-body acoustic in the Progressive Rock genre was unusual and iconic in itself. His work with both YES and ASIA earned him Guitar Player magazine's "Best Overall Guitarist" five years in a row (1977-1981), the only guitarist to ever accomplish this. In 2002, Gibson's Custom Shop released a Steve Howe Signature ES-175:

If there's anything more iconic, it would have to be Jimi Hendrix's upside-down Fender Stratocaster.

Re: Iconic Guitars

And of course we can't pass by Mark Knopfler and his red Fender Stratocaster. Mark plays other guitars (as do the rest of them) but this guitar always comes to mind when someone mentions him:

Re: Iconic Guitars

I know this is the electric section, but I think of Willie Nelson`s 1969 Martin nylon string. It looks awful. Has a big hole on the top and he always plays it. Or Buck Owens red white and blue Harmony. Electrics-The late Stevie Ray Vaughn`s Strats. Naturally worn out. Not bought that way

Re: Iconic Guitars

Here are a couple more icons:

1) Brian May and his "Red Special" which he co-built with his father:

2) Prince and his custom-built "Cloud". Whatever one might think of his music and his image, there's no doubt that he's a top-notch guitarist:

3) And last but not least, the man himself - Les Paul - with the guitar that bears his name:

Re: Iconic Guitars

Im liking these suggestions so far, personally im struggling between any Les Paul as i currently own an LP copy but also my first guitar was a red strat copy and for myself they are the two most iconic just because I have owned them however theres so many others like the ones mentioned in the thread so far, guitars that when you mention the guitarists name you picture them with that iconic guitar immediately, then theres others that have got a great story behind them like "lucille", its a real tough choice to choose just one.

Re: Iconic Guitars

Mike ... you're right about not being able to choose just one. Here's a couple more that come to mind:

1) Chet Atkins and his Gretsch "Tennessee Rose":

2) Eddie Van Halen flying through the air with his "Frankenstein":

I hope no one gets annoyed at these pictorial posts. Mike's idea for this thread is like a trip down memory lane, and it's been fun thinking about all of the great guitarists I've admired over the years, and how they've been an influence.

Re: Iconic Guitars

This is an older post, but I thought we might throw in a few iconic bass guitars:

1) Sir Paul McCartney's Hoffner 500/1 :

2) Chris Squire's Rickenbacker 4001 Stereo Bass :

3) Geddy Lee's Fender Jazz Bass :

Gotta love Geddy's T-shirt in this shot, from some short-film spoofs they did about themselves.

Cliff Williams (AC/DC) Cliff uses a '76 Music Man strung with D'Addario flat wounds. For amplification Cliff uses early '70s Ampeg SVT and 8 x 10 SVT Cab.

Re: Iconic Guitars

It's only fair that we have a few iconic acoustic guitars in this anthology.

1) Bluegrass great Tony Rice and his Martin D-28. These days, Tony is playing a custom unit from Santa Cruz guitars, but I'll always think of his clean fingering and squeezing amazing sustain out of his Martin:

2) Willie Nelson's "Trigger". What else can be said about his road-worn companion:

3) Sheryl Crow's Gibson SJ Special Edition:

Re: Iconic Guitars

got to say, i'd love to have an SJ special, as a rule i don't like gibbies, but i'd go for that one.

i bought a white strat back in 1972 after seeing george harrison playing one in the bangla desh film, it was ok! it felt great in my hands but the sound coming from it wasnt great. i now use a telecaster which feels great and sounds great also, but that could be due to the FX pedal and the amp. it all comes down to sustain and tone (if your a rocker) clean chorus and reverb for country boys.

for acoustic i love the sound ian anderson gets from his small acoustic that he uses on recordings and on stage.

for bass, what about that bassist in level 42? simply amazing.
