You know, this by rights, should be a sticky thread where we can post up all the bargains we find.
Here is a site dedicated to free (as in gratis) VST plugins for your DAW of choice.
nice site jerome, just when i was getting fed-up with my keyboard sounds.
i also agree, a sticky with useful sites would be ideal
I found this and installed it,this program is easy and fast it will print out your creation in notation and most important it opens midi files and converts them to notation and plays the score.

This free program is really easy to use it has midi input so you can play on your keyboard and select the notes, duration(whole, half, etc.)as well as rests, accidentals, keys and exports as a midi file to load into the above program to print out the score. way cool

I would be remis if I didn't mention Reaper, the free as you want it to be DAW....
I do believe I can copy and paste my Miroslav Philharmonik instrument banks into the pluggins folder of Reaper and it would act as the host

Yup. Reaper acts as it's own VST host, and does a pretty good job of it. It also supports Apple's AU format, which is nice, as the interface on the AU plugins tend to be pretty good. No shock there.
Some awesome VST plugins for the low low cost of nuthin right here from TAL.

I am not a big fan of digital reverb, but the gentle 'verb coming out of the TAL-Reverb box is as nice as I've found.
Jerome is this reverb equal or better then the reverb effects in Reaper? and after downloading do I click options, preferences and add or scan to include it in Reapers vst plugins?
I think so. I took out ReaVerb last night and replaced it with the TAL-Reverb. The effect is much more subtle, and I don't feel like I lost the direct sound in all the echoes.
I'd still rather have a giant awesome room, but in a pinch...
As far as install goes, Mac installs all audio plugins, regardless of type (VST, AU Component, etc...) in one spot so I just drag the VST directory to there and I'm done. When you install it on Windows, keep note of where the installer puts it on your hard drive, and then do the same exercise we did last night with the VST Preferences by adding that path to the VST directories. I'm assuming you know what *not* to do. ;-)
You might also want to check out Voxengo SPAN. It's a spectrum analyzer but it is a whole lot more useful because it allows you to set up A/B testing between two different setups, and the actual display on the analyzer is a whole lot easier to read. And also, free.

Oh if you are on a windows 64 bit system a lot of the vst's will not work,, you need the ones with the win 64 symbol.
What do I need to customize or tweak my vocals? I am new to using audio software or VST for recording myself. I have had Audacity for years but used it for other purposes. There is one area that I need help with. On some songs I would like to be able to enhance my vocals. Different ways for different songs.Raspy or rougher to softer or smoother. I can do most on my own but would like to know if there is an effect or combination of effects to help produce the sound I am looking for at that time. Can anyone help?

I think the best way to enhance any vocals is at the point of recording, there are several hardware vocal enhancers available most of them are incorporated into the recorders an example would be my Roland Boss BR-8 it has a library of vocal effects all the enhancing is done pre production or as it is recorded just type in your search "vocal enhancers" hardware I am sure you will find what you are looking for.
Thank you Russell. That sounds like a good direction to find what I am looking for. Your Roland Boss BR-8, sounds like something I would be looking for. A digital recorder with pre-set vocal enhancing software. I just started to read about Vocoder and some plug-ins in the Audacity program I have. I didn't read too far into it but, it sounded like it would have a wide range of customizing vocals. I'm not sure.I need to read up on it more.Do you know anything about Vocoder?

I dont have any info on Vocoder I still feel it is better to enhance as you record not after only because it effects how you phrase the song
Avid has released a free version of Pro-tools, "Pro-tools First."

I've not tried it yet, as I'm not a huge Pro Tools fan, but I'm going to put it in the tool box just because you can't beat the price.

Question: beamer what is this app for?
FL Studio (a.k.a. "Fruity Loops") is a sequencer and sampler used heavily by people that create House and EDM music. I've got an android version on my tablet. It's fun to play with or to bang out simple scratch ideas.
I'm a bit concerned about that link, though. FL Studio is $100 for the basic version. It's not free.

I just bought a Focusrite interface, and along with it comes a ton of good software, little of it free unless you are registered with Focusrite. They have what is called "The Plugin Collective" where every month there is a commercial VST made available to members. You don't actually have to own a Focusrite interface to take advantage of it, but more is available to those who do. So far I've recieved
* Focusrite's Red 1 and Red 2 compressor and EQ
* Addictive Keys instrument of my choice (I went with the grand piano)
* Syntorus' Double Path analog chorus.
That's about $500 worth of software for nothing, which is quite a bargain considering the interface was $300.
So I'd register with Focusrite just in case they decide to drop some freebies on everyone, which they do on occasion.
