Topic: Problem with Cities

I watched a movie this weekend with my wife about a Londoner who went to a French village when his uncle died and left him his French estate and vineyard. I believe it was entitled A Good Year. Anyway, I thought to myself, "Hmm, I guess France isn’t so bad after all."  which kind of gives away an underlying feeling I've had since a friend of mind was mugged in Paris in the early 80's. Anyway back to the song, I wanted to just look at a part of France that still would make you think "France' so that ended up in this song as Paris, mainly since my earlier feeling about France was more centered about Paris anyway, but this eventually became the song about people assuming that just because they read or see or hear of a bad thing or two about a city or country or place that it’s not worth going visiting or very different from our home when in fact it closer to our cities than we realize. Anyway I hope you like it

Problem with Cities by Jeff Gilpin

Verse 1

[A]I have a problem with Paris

Parisians I don’t under[E]stand

Complaining all day 'bout the United States

But they don’t try to fix their own [A]land

Perhaps if they did less complaining

They’d have time to fix what they [D]got

Yeah [E]I have a problem with Paris, but then maybe [A]not[A7]

Chorus1

Maybe if I [D]went there to see

How living in [A]Paris would be

Then maybe [E]Paris would not be so [A]bad[A7]

They are just [D]people you know

Not much different than [A]we are so

I [E]guess I’m okay with [D]Paris so please don’t get [A]mad

Verse 2

But I [A]do have a problem with London

Londoners I understand [E]less

It’s smoky and dirty and needs a good wash

To clean up that terrible [A]mess

It seems those folks are too busy

With their football and their royal[D]ty

[E]I have a problem with London, but let’s [A]see[A7]

Chorus2

Maybe if I [D]went there to be fair

Breathing in that [A]smoggy London air

I’d [E]either pass out or maybe I’d accli[A]mate[A7]

It’s where they all [D]work day and night

Living the life [A]they feel is right

So [E]I’m okay with [D]London I guess it’s first [A]rate

Break

There are [E]so many places [D]so many faces

That [A]comprise all our cities on [E]earth

They [E]all are quite different and [D]yet much the same

[E]People living their [D]lives from their [A]birth[A7]

We [E]go through our lives [D]thinking that our cities

Can [A]never do anything [E]wrong

And [E]think all the others their [D]fathers and mothers

[E]Wishing all the [D]cities could just get [A]along[E] [D] [A]

Re: Problem with Cities

Jeff, very well said and with a wonderfully simple chord set also.  In my limited travels, I have always enjoyed connecting with people.  The 'sights' are generally boring, but meeting people is always fun.  James
