Topic: Eyes Like Mountain Water

Here is a story song I've been playing with. Kind of a "in the past and then back to the present" story if you know what I mean. Hope you like it. For some reason I hear it with a banjo ...sure wish I could play one.

Eyes Like Mountain Water By Jeff Gilpin

October 24, 2011

Verse 1

[F]His family moved to the city

Just [ ]before the start of school

[Bb]They got out of the mountains

Left the streams and mountain [F]cool

Because the [C]city education

Would be [Bb]better for the children

And they [C]wanted their children

To have it [Bb]better than it ever was for [F]them

Chorus 1

Because you [Bb]sometimes want what’s better

Even though it [F]wasn’t really bad there

You [C]figure that it may be worth a [F]shot

But you [Bb]have to give up something

Just to [F]try and grab that brass ring

Even [C]though the ring you reach for’s not a [Bb]lot

Verse 2

[F]So he started school there

[ ]Met a bunch of new faces

Who [Bb]didn’t seem much different

From those that he knew in the mountain [F]places

But [C]one face caught his eye there

With a [Bb]smile as bright as sunshine

And [C]eyes like mountain water

That [Bb]somehow seemed to stop him in [F]tracks

Chorus 2

But for [Bb]her it wasn’t the same

She [F]never even knew his name

And [C]there was nothing he could do to [F]change it

Her [Bb]eyes were for another

So he [F]tried to look the other

Way but [C]somehow his eye’s always came back to [Bb]her

Bridge

Then [Bb]life goes on and on again

Without getting near a happy [ ]end

[Bb]His went on and hers went on [F]too

But [Am]after so much time

He [Dm]still remembers the rhyme

Some [Bb]memories seem always to keep [C]true [Bb]

Verse 3

[F]Many years passed by him

Life and [ ]living left him aged

Then [Bb]he stumbled across her

It was like he turned back the [F]pages

He [C]recognized her in an instant

Though her [Bb]sunshine seemed more settled

But [C]even the setting sunlight

Can [Bb]take your breath away in the [F]skies

Chorus 3

And they [Bb]talk about the years

Some of [F]laughter some of tears

She [C]smiled remembering them all [F]well

And the [Bb]boy that she had the eyes for

He was [F]gone but not forgotten

And those [C]eyes [Bb]...oh the stories they could [F]tell

Thanks Dino,

Well my daughter moved out of my basement so I can get re-situated down there again and start recording. I'll move it up the list and get it recorded soon as I'm set up.

Re: Eyes Like Mountain Water

Not really the one who got a way. Just an embellishment of a childhood crush which I thought would make a good story song. Thanks Robert.

Re: Eyes Like Mountain Water

Just gave it a whirl (on guitar - no banjo) and I am looking forward to hearing how it should be.

Re: Eyes Like Mountain Water

Yep, I plan on getting this one recorded too. Still getting this one down though so it might be a while until I'm ready to record.
