Topic: Monthly accountability message

Not a drip, drop, or ounce.  Between January and March - roughly 18 pounds fell off.  Doing the same things, the April and May weigh-ins showed 246.4 pounds each time.  Complete stall.  So I increased my effort, improved my diet more, and for the June weigh-in I weighed 246.8.  I had a goal of five pounds of weight loss for May and instead gained 0.4 pounds instead.  I am disgusted and frustrated.  I am hungry all the time and sore from exercise.  I've purchased a pedometer and have taken the 10,000 steps a day challenge.  Even if I take a break from resistance exercise for recovery, no change.  It seems as if the exercise makes no difference whatever.

Very frustrating.

Eventual goal remains the same.  More diet change in order.  Reduce carbs, I guess eliminate booze altogether (hardly seems reasonable, but it is useless calories), and longer periods of non-aerobic/fat-burning exercise.  I'll be tuning up my bike. If that doesn't work, I'm going to have to check in with the doctor to see whether there's a thyroid issue.

Zurf..  very frustrating indeed..  the plateau.  Eliminating booze altogether..  commendable sir.  If you're a beer drinker, don't they have 55 calorie beer?  55 calories.  Jeez.. you use more calories just raising the glass..  kidding.  Keep it up ..  I bet one day soon you'll get on the scale and see a marked improvement to inspire again..  meanwhile, keep on strummin'

Re: Monthly accountability message

I would prefer a glass of cool water to a 55 calorie beer, so at least that works in my favor!  I have scarce few beers any longer because of the high carb load they have.  However, both wine and hard liquor have very few initial carbs and I have been enjoying a bit of those.  Carbs aren't problematic with them, it's just the empty calories at this point.

I am allergic to my favorite vegetable - carrots, and I am also allergic to favorite low-carb snack - nuts.  It was upon discovering these things that I started to balloon up in weight.  I had a very good diet going on, which unfortunately was trying to kill me.  So I switched to other foods and got carried away with the carbs and BOOM I turned into a big, fat, load.  So now the challenge is to find a high-protein, low-carb, high-fiber food that does not include soy (also allergic), carrots, or nuts of any kind.  Good luck with that, right?  I miss Snickers bars too.

If anyone is wondering, I'm going to suspend the no beer thing during this summer's river jams.

It had occurred to me, and so I pretty much suspended resistance exercises in favor of doubling up on aerobic exercise.

I'm thinking that I'm going to enhance that some too.  Maybe add the resistance exercise back in but only a couple days per week and then use the Demonic Dominator 2000 (our elliptical machine) several days per week in addition to my daily hikes or bike rides.

The elliptical is the thing that I was using frequently in the cold weather when I was losing weight that I have not been doing in the warmer weather, preferring to walk outside instead.

So maybe walking outside AND using the Demonic Dominator 2000...

I hate being hungry.

Re: Monthly accountability message

Zurf... going hungry could be what's doing it.  Perhaps you're not eating enough???  if your body is hungry, it will go into "starvation mode" in which it will hold onto fat, and not burn it well.  I doubt you're really "starving" but your body doesn't know that.  A good breakfast would be something like... 2 eggs (minus one of the yolks) with a slice of cheese (from the deli, not over processed American) on a wheat pita or something of the sort, a serving of fruit (10 grapes as an example), a glass of milk (8 oz is a small glass), and if you're starving with that add in perhaps a serving of cottage cheese.  then you need a healthy snack, then lunch, another snack, then dinner.  You should be eating all day long, but HEALTHY eating!  smile

I tend to stay away from low-fat products because what they lack in fat they make up for in sodium to add flavor (I'd prefer the fat to the salt personally in a diet).  You get ONE to TWO cups of coffee (or anything else with caffeine) per day... after that for each cup you drink you need to add another 8 oz of water to fight the effects... and remember for water take your weight in pounds, divide in half, and that's how many ounces of water you should be drinking.  That's 123 ounces... or 15 8oz glasses per day (most large glasses hold close to 16 oz BTW).  Is it possible that you're NOT drinking enough water?  It's a LOT, and the caffeine and water are my biggest downfalls personally.  Half the time when we're hungry, it's our bodies tricking us because really we're just thirsty.  You CAN count your non-caffeine drinks towards the water consumption also.  Not the liquor though!  lol

Add lemon and spice to help speed up the metabolism.

OH... and a really healthy food that has the qualities of vegetables, fiber, and protein... is ... LENTILS.  Can you eat them??? Peanuts are lentils, so I'm not sure if you'd be allergic to them or not... or if it's more so the tree nuts???  If you can't eat them, then take a look at the other beans out there as they are really good for you, if you can stomach them without adding too much fat to make a decent flavor.  I love black beans over rice.

It sure wouldn't hurt to visit the doctor and have them run some bloodwork to see if there is a thyroid issue.  Most people with thyroid issues tend to also have major HAIR issues btw.  My sister in law's hair was falling out like CRAZY ... now that the thyroid is under control with meds/diet... her hair grows sooo fast she needs the grey colored every 2-3 weeks (most people go 6-8 weeks).  I would check into that.  It sure would feel good to lose weight AND gain hair!  smile  GOOD LUCK SIR!

MKM - Thanks.  All my life I've had physical jobs leading to an enormous metabolism.  I could eat anything I wanted any time I wanted as much as I wanted.  Now that middle age is in full swing and I have a sedentary desk job, such is not the case.  I am following a diet - both volumes and substances - recommended by my GI.  It's just that being used to eating three or four times as much, I'm hungry all the time.

I'm drinking tons of water.  I haven't measured the volume, but on a thumbnail guesstimate it's more than you've listed.  Whenever I feel hungry, I drink some water.  And I am always hungry.

I get my blood work done annually.  I'll be telling the doctor this year to have a particular eye on thyroid.

My hair has been long gone and I would prefer it to stay that way.  I had the most baby fine ridiculous hair.  It looked greasy minutes after washing and blow dry AND it had a double crown so I was constantly fighting a cowlick.  It's better gone.  If it grew back, I'd cut it off anyway.

Dang, dang, and dang some more!  Well, I'm glad you've got a diet to stick to, and you're doing it!  The only other thing I can think of is to change the exercise routine, but you're already on your way there.  Stick with it, and don't get discouraged!  I am happy to hear you'll have a few drinks with us all in July, although I hear I'm much funnier if you're sober and I'm the one that's been drinking.  tongue  ha!

Re: Monthly accountability message

Zurf how many meals does your diet consist of? Most people that have a strenuous exercise routine eat up to 8 small meals a day in order to feel satisfied and to keep the metabolism going. Maybe you should just eat more healthy snacks throughout the day and that should keep you energized for more arobic fat burning. Keep it going and don't give up and you'll see your goals in no time. Good luck.

Re: Monthly accountability message

What is your body fat percentage? How do you feel other than hungry? Are you tired all the time or have more energy? What is your daily caloric intake?

Interesting to know the answers to those questions.

Some thoughts:

Maybe you are in an exercise rut. What do you do? Jogging? Biking? High impact or low? Try swimming. Best cardio you can do and burns the heck out of fat. If you are just jogging do something else if you can. If you exercise the same every day your body gets used to it. Change it up and use other muscles. This will help overall fitness and may jump your metabolism as you must now re-build muscles that are not used to working.

If you are feeling healthy or your health has improved then don't worry about the weight so much. some people carry more weight. You might have also turned a lot of fat into muscle as mentioned before. Muscle weighs much more than fat. How do you look, compared to before, in the mirror? More solid?

Every one that tries to lose weight will go through this. If it is not an issue with your endocrine system then avoid the scale for awhile and just keep on task. Evey time you eat right and exercise you are doing good so don't get discouraged. If it is an endocrine issue then staying the course will still help you along with treatment.

Sounds like your plan is solid. Maybe you need to change it up a bit but dont let a few pounds get you down if your health is showing positive improvements.

Last thought: Cheat a bit every now and then.

Good luck.

Re: Monthly accountability message

Good advice from all.  I am humbled and grateful that you all took so much time and effort to provide recommendations.  I am feeling better and my fitness level is improving.  I will try to work in some bike riding among the walking and look in the Chuck Norris Punisher (Total Gym) handbook for some different exercises to try.

I had a guest this weekend, who commented on my portion sizes.  He suggested that even though portion sizes are substantially reduced from previously, they are perhaps still a bit too large for my purposes.  So portion size control, changing up exercising, and staying the course seems to be the consensus - and it sounds sensible from a "Hmmmmm, let me think about that" perspective.  So I guess that's what I'll do.

Thank you all for your interest and advice.

Re: Monthly accountability message

Portion size is a very good thing to look at.  I normally eat a small portion size for most meals.  Sometimes I over eat, but mostly just eat small amounts at any given meal.  For some reason, I do that naturally.  But, I tend to eat more often, but there again, usually small portions.  As a matter of fact, my wife and I always comment on the extremely large portions that most restaraunts serve.  We think they always over do it.  But, as we eat and watch others eat, somewhat, not staring of course, we see that most people usually clean their plates.  We always have enough left over for another meal.  How do you view portioning in eating establishments?  Something to ask yourself.

Re: Monthly accountability message

One thing helped me lose about 40 pounds in 6 months back in '05, along with swimming 2500 yards and running 3.3 miles on alternating days:

Long time ago a famous person was asked how he stayed so thin. I believe it was Satchel Paige the great Negro League pitcher. He told the person he had grown up poor and always hungry. As he made his money he could eat anything he wanted but he ALWAYS stopped when he was no longer hungry.

I did this myself. I ate whatever I wanted but never got full. I stopped eating as soon as I was not hungry.

Body fat percentage?  No idea.  Something less than 150%, I'd think.

How do I feel / energy?  I feel pretty good most of the time.  With the reduction of booze and increase of water, I am sleeping much more soundly, which has lead to feeling better overall.  Also, over the winter I think I was suffering some minor symptoms of depression.  With the increased activity levels, I am also regaining interest in the things I enjoy doing (which is mostly fishing and puttering around the house, but they're things I like).  To be clear because it's come up several times, my prior consumption of booze was not excessive.  I was honest with my doctor about what, how much, and when I imbibe and he thought it was fine.

What is my daily caloric intake?  No idea.  My wife has a food scale and she logs everything for carbs, grams of fiber, and calories.  Perhaps I will ask her to teach me how.  I tried using several Google food calculators and found myself extremely frustrated with them.  They were flat-out annoying in their interface, and frequently did not include very normal things that I eat and did include things that it seems no one would eat.

What do I do?  For exercise, I walk/hike and use a Total Gym.  I have tuned up my bike and gotten in a few rides, which have demonstrated how terribly out of condition I am despite what is now well over a year's worth of conditioning.  I know how to swim.  Given my paddling and fishing hobbies, being able to swim aggressively in turbulent water for several hundred yards is a safety issue.  Otherwise, I absolutely abhor swimming.  It is a good exercise.  But I find it dreadful.  My children love it and so it is impossible for me to go to the pool and actually exercise.  I have to watch my children because they are not old enough yet to permit them to swim unattended (despite the eldest being better at it than am I).

I'm not sure if that enlightens you, but I hated to see the questions left unanswered when you've taken so much time, effort, and thought to try and help.

If I ate until I did not feel hungry, I'm afraid there would be a sudden and terrible shortage of pepperoni pizza in the tri-state area of Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland.  It's a bit like a tall tale to see me eat when I am trying to satisfy my Appetite.  The capitalization is correct, in that my Appetite has taken on a legendary status within its own mythos.

Re: Monthly accountability message

Hi Zurf

I have been following your thread with interest. As a fellow long time sufferer of trying to loose weight, am now pushing 50 and it just gets harder and harder. I can sympathise with your predicament.
Everyone has given you sound advice. What I will say may sound a bit bonkers.
Try cutting down on the exercise. You seem to have been doing extremely well and are very focussed, which is a good thing. But your body has adjusted to accept the hard work you put in and copes very well with it. You need to throw it a curve ball, as you call it across the pond. By cutting down or even stopping the exercise for a few days your body will still be in high energy need mode and as long as you cut down a bit on your food intake, you will be surprised at how many calories you will burn doing nothing. After a few days start execiseing again and see if it makes a diference. Repeat when needed.

Some other quick points, try not to be too harsh on yourself you have done brilliantly up to now. Always be possitive, the fact you havent lost many pounds recently is so insignificant to the fantastic achievement of NOT GAINING any.
Cut down on your water drinking try just drinking when you feel thirsty.

And I agree with you on the pizza front you cant stop until the box is empty.

Good luck and keep on it
