Topic: Beginner 6 String

hi all, im just learning to play on my mums 12 string Eko Ranger and feel i need a 6 string to learn on instead. is there much diference? If so i would ask for any recommendations as i cannot go to a shop and see what sounds good (as  i cannot yet play). im only 16 so i have a budget of around 150 pounds.

thanks

Re: Beginner 6 String

Well, if your mum still plays, or if you've got a friend who plays, I'd ask one of them to go with you to help you choose. The 150.00 limit is going to naturally confine you to certain selection of guitars, and as a beginner, I'd want a guitar with good "action"--and only someone with experience playing a guitar can help you determine that.

Re: Beginner 6 String

Good advice above, but when you're in the shops don't restrict yourself to only playing guitars in your price range.  Play everything they have.  You're looking for an elusive combination of sound and feel, and when you find it, you might be willing to save up to get it.

Re: Beginner 6 String

Buying a 6 string is deffinatley a good idea.  I had an EKO Ranger 12, when I was learning. It was hard going though it sounded great when it was in tune.

You will learn a lot quicker on a 6 string.  £150 isn't a bad price for your first 6 string.  An entry level Takermine will be in your price range. I'd stay well clear of cheap Fenders. Where are you doing your shopping?

Go for the guitar which is just out of your price range. Then haggle untill they sell it for the price you can afford.

Buy it in a guitar shop, not in Argos or a supermarket.

      Hello:
I wrote new lyrics for the song "Silhouette" by a band (Grey Starr)
whose lead singer passed away a number of years ago.  Those lyrics I wrote
are being donated to my Missouri Lutheran Synod Church (St.'s Peter & Paul)
in Houghton, MI.  The guitar player that plays for the orchestra that
accompanies the choir needs the chords for that song as he told me that the
lyrics are worthy of being sung for the services he performs for.  Will someone
reply and then I can send you that song?          Thanks for your help, Sincerely, Louie DePuydt

Re: Beginner 6 String

thanks for the advice.
ill be doing my searching mostly in northern ireland, if anyone knows whereabouts i can get a good deal here it would be appreciated (though i doubt it!).
i suppose if i get my mum to come along to test guitars she may give in and addd to my budget hopefully! smile

also is online shopping a good idea, and if so are there any uk sites that have a good reputation?

Again, thanks for your advice because i really am clueless when it comes to guitar buying (and playing for that matter!)

Re: Beginner 6 String

You know, you could just string the 12 as a 6 string..... Now harm in it and it gives you more finger room....  All you have to do is remove the other 6 (smaller gauge) strings and you're good to go.

Re: Beginner 6 String

Thats a good idea, but would strummimg not be compromised with the larger gap between strings? Just wondering, but if not i may try it. Would make picking much easier anyway.

Thatnks. Nathan.

Re: Beginner 6 String

Just keep in mind that once you get used to playing that way, that any other six string gutars you play or buy after that may feel a lot different to you, but it really shouldn't be that much of a difference.

This looks like a nice guitar. I've owned a Fairclough River for the last 3 years. I love it

Re: Beginner 6 String

I agree with Guitarpix. I had an old 12 string Yamaha with a piece of the nut chipped away enough to prevent me from adding the second little E string. I strung it up with six nylon strings and gave it to my boat builder buddy who's hands were damaged and needed a guitar to fret super easily.
It played and sounded great.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
