Topic: Changing key?

Does tuning down change the key the same as using a capo? While looking for a song I found diff chord charts for it. One says drop d and tune down 1/2 step. The other says standard tuning and capo 1st fret. Can you just not tune down if the key doesn't fit your voice?

I'm puzzled.

Re: Changing key?

Makes sense to me Z... if you tuned down a half step then capo on first fret you'd be right back to standard tuning...

Re: Changing key?

it really only changes the pitch if you tune up or down not the key pitch is usually A= 440 (tuning fork) ,tuning a guitar down and putting a capo on as Amy suggested is fine the guitar dont know but your voice will smile

One should always find the key that's friendly for your voice but sometimes that can be a challenge to get it into a guitar friendly mode. Sometime in church the piano will play stuff in Eb. I could tune guitar down to an Eb but instead I'll capo 1st fret and play a D chord which is key of Eb but much easier to play than the Eb chord.  Or could capo at 6th fret and play a G chord. Usually the only time I'll tune down a 1/2 step or more is to make the guitar easier to play, get a darker sound, or for lots of bends.
Hope this makes sense...I often confuse myself and not sure if I'm able to communicate my ideas. jg

Re: Changing key?

Hi zguitar go to the top of the forum and there are some great printable stickies for changing keys w/ a capo

Re: Changing key?

I know how to use the capo to change key and all. But I don't understand the tuning part. The only reason to tune down is to change pitch? I guess that makes sense, to get a diff sound. Can you tune up from standard?

BTW, I don't sing so I have no key. I was just curious when I came across the tuning thing.

Re: Changing key?

tuning up from standard is not recomended due to the pounds of pressure the strings exert on the neck and a capo dose it without and possible harm. there are differnt tunings most or all tune the strings down such as D tuning which is just tuning the low E string down to match the 4th string (D) and it give a nice round sound but you have to make adjustments and play the G chord useing the 5th fret for the root G as it would normally be an A on the 6th string before de tuning also there are open chord tunings major or minor where a slide is used some websites feature a list of tunings DAGDAD is only one experiment with several is the best way and find a few you like smile
