Topic: Friday morning.

Time to get to work.  Working at home sure has some advantages, but there's one disadvantage I hadn't counted on.  Before I pretty much just went to work and came home.  Now, I don't "go" to work any more.  I just walk down the stairs to my office.  I'm almost kind of getting cabin fever - and the weather is beautiful.  I'll have to make it a point to start taking walks around the block or the park at the end of the street during breaks.

Happy Friday everyone.  Except to you UK folk.  In which case you're sliding solidly into Friday afternoon and plotting your weekends.  In your case, Happy Friday Afternoon (which is even happier).

Re: Friday morning.

Hey, Zurf.

I feel your frustration.  I've worked at home for very long periods at various times in my life.  The "cabin fever" that you speak of got so bad at times that I took jobs I didn't want and didn't like JUST to get out of the house.

Your idea about walks around the block is a good one.  Remember that even people in offices get a one-hour lunch break, so don't feel like a slacker if you step out for a bit.  Chances are, you probably eat lunch in front of your computer, anyway!

And of course, the good old guitar is a great friend to have when you're at home working alone.  In my case, I've got ukes in every room, so it's real easy to pick one up any time I'm feeling stressed or lonely.

Me with my first ukulele, a Junior Beatles model, in 1966.  After Mom threw it down the stairs in a fit of rage, I became a drummer for life.  At age 43, I bought my second uke...

Re: Friday morning.

I think if worked at home next to my guitars, I would never get any work done.

Re: Friday morning.

Well, good Friday to you all.  I think the one problem I would have working at home, is keeping my mind on my work.  I am sure there can be lots of distractions.  Well, good luck anyway.

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Re: Friday morning.

I feel your pain. I've been working out of my home office since March. Definitely different. I never thought I'd say this but I miss getting up and going to the office....

Feeling like a social shut in and with the guitars within arm's reach, productivity is way down smile

Re: Friday morning.

My productivity seems to be up with fewer distractions.  I have been used to working in an office most of my career and the company where I've been has cubes.  There's nothing wrong with cubes and it's not an ego thing, but I did find it distracting to hear everything going on in the space around me and the hallways nearby.  At home I have an office with a door on it, which allows me to shut out most of the household noise.  I also get to listen to music, which I couldnt' do in a cube.  So it's better and I'm getting more done, but it is a little socially constraining.  That's not meant to be a complaint, just an observation.  I love my job, and in this economic environment I know how blessed I am to have one.

Edit to add: Three really nice things is that I can see my kids off on the school bus, be here to greet them when they get home, and the Friday night commute to my dry bar for a nice bourbon on the rocks is about three steps and takes from 5:00:00 to 5:00:02.

I think working at home or at office have plus and minus sides,I guess it is best to balance out your day with some imaginative ideas.

Re: Friday morning.

When I worked from home I use to take my laptop and cordless phone and sat on the deck.

Re: Friday morning.

My three year old gets in the way of what I'd like to be doing from home (having a client in my chair getting chemical services on her hair while the 3 yr old is dumping an entire bag of dog food on the kitchen floor is not cool).  I miss being out and about, though for the most part I've been the sahm or wahm.  I feel your pain... and gladly await the day when I can either afford a babysitter or she is in school.  I guess the bonus to my situation is that I do have real live people that come to see me.  I hated making cold calls from the house while selling, partially cuz I hated it, partially because friends and family would just come knock on the door and not respect my working hours.  I usually either hid my car, or drove to the town I'd be making appointments in and made calls from my cell so that I was away from the house.  I like Butch's idea best!

Zurf

I wish my commute time to the bar was the same as yours, of course that would certainly effect my productivity in a negative way.
