Topic: Strumming pattern

Hi, I'm learning guitar at the moment & i'm really struggling to figure out strumming patterns, even with watching youtube videos.  currently i'm trying to figure out Dido's "Mary's in India" strumming pattern.  I've spent ages watching a video and trying but can't get close to anything that sounds right AND is 8 beats.  any advice or a suggested pattern to try would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Strumming pattern

I'd love to help you out, sadly I'm not very good at writing in words how to do a strumming pattern.  It sounds like (1)down... (2)down... (3)down up up (4)down up ... does that help (I put it into 4 beats rather than 8)?  Pretty cool song I never heard before though!  Thanks for bringing it up.  I haven't been at this for a year yet, so I could be way off... but I'd try something like that for starters (I might have to listen to this a few more times and try it now too!)  If anyone is interested in trying their hand at a strumming pattern, or just listening here's a youtube link:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCBSq7g9z0w

OH... and Welcome to Chordie and the forums!  Everyone here is pretty friendly and willing to help out new members!  Read the stickies at the top of each section and jump right in!  smile

Re: Strumming pattern

Amy's right.  Try strumming:
Down   Down  DownUpUpUpDown and repeat.

This girl's got it down like that.

And welcome to Chordie, where we're all just learning from each other.

Re: Strumming pattern

Thank you very much to both of you. I will give that a go.  Steve, that's the exact video i've been watching yikes).  i've been driving myself mad trying lots of different patterns but just couldnt get it (I could get 10 beats!!) - i guess that's all part of it.  Thanks again.  I really appreciate it.

Re: Strumming pattern

You're welcome.  Remember that when you play a song, without an entire band behind you, it's a matter of your interpretation.  So don't get too hung up on a pattern being totally perfect.  My dad and I strum the same songs somewhat differently (and we're talking simple songs!).  The most important thing is to have fun!  Try a few different patterns and see what works best for you.  Good luck and have fun!
