Topic: A Left Hander Playing a Right Handed guitar

This kid cooks. He is a left-hander playing a standard strung guitar and the low strungs are on the bottom.

I met a braid-you-hair lady down in the islands who played the same way. She took my guitar, turned it over and played left-handed.
She could only make chords with three or four strings but she managed to sound great on everything (reggae) she played.
Her singing voice was super but quite hoarse. She said it got that way from hollering at her kids.
She rowed up in a leaky wooden skiff. I bailed it out for her while she braided hair. She asked me only for the lyrics to "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" I enclosed some nylon picks and a fresh set of strings for her at home guitar.

He sounds great.  I guess he must have learned that way as a kid maybe.  If you don't know the difference, then you're good to go.  It is probably not harder if that's the only way you learn.

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

I can't even begin to imagine being capable of playing like that!

Elizabeth Cotton played that way.  Here's a picture of the guitar she wrote Freight Train on - encased in a display at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.  Notice how it's worn near the sound hole opposite the pick guard.

This has always been one of my very favorite folk songs, since I was a little boy.  And oddly enough, I've never learned it.  Perhaps I should.

Re: A Left Hander Playing a Right Handed guitar

I have a story about a guy that played a righthanded guitar upside down. I've told this story before on the forum but it's been awhile.

I was livin in North Dakota at the time and I had heard a little bar about 50 miles away had open mics on thursday nights, so Lizzie and I loaded up the guitar and decided to check it out. When I got there , a couple a guys were playing and sounded real good. There weren't alot of people there and after a 1/2 hr or so the two guys playin asked me if I wanted to take over and play.
I said sure so I grabbed my guitar and got plugged in to the PA and jumped on a stool. I asked if they would like to play with me and one guy said sure. I started playing and singing and was a little nervous and playing without a songbook and after awhile it finally dawned on me that the guy playing with me was doing a lot of upstrums. I think I played Hotel California, and House of the Rising Sun can't remember what others and he was throwing in some mean lead licks. I really didn't realize till after I had played about 6 songs with him that he was playing the guitar upside down. I guess I kind of had tunnel vision concentrating on lyrics and being in a new venue. It got kinda busy and I didn't even get the guys name or talk to him afterward.

About a week later I was at the music store in Dickinson N D  and was visiting with the owner and I was telling him about the guy I played with. He said that's interesting where was the guy from. I said  I think someone said he was from Fairview Mont. The owner said Oh, I know the guy he has been in here several times. He said did he flip it over and play it right handed to, I said not that I noticed. He said the guy could play it just as well right handed too. I sure wish I woulda had my little Q3 then to video it, when it happened.

I still feel dumb for not realizing what was going on around me smile
