Topic: Where to next?

I have been playing on and off for 15 years, with 1 year of classes in Jr High.  Point I've taken this long to get the notes to sing out, on time and on purpose... thought this would be great but now everything i play sounds all to similar, I'm experimenting with different cord shapes on the neck ( all these years I've only practised/was aware of open chords) and this helps a little, but even though the music is clear it seems to be...bland.  Any suggestions?

Re: Where to next?

I know a man who played acoustic for many years and he recently switched to an electric guitar for the exact reason you state.  With the electric he has options for tones and sounds that can't be made on an acoustic.  I've only been playing acoustic for a couple of months. I have no idea on the limitations of the acoustic guitar, but it makes sense that the electric guitar can give you more options.

Re: Where to next?

tony thanks for the response, I was asking more about technique.  Since the last post I've been tooling around and I think the Jam Play site thats linked w/ this one is where I'm going to head.  Thanks

Re: Where to next?

Well, all I can say is.... if you're flat picking, try Travis style, if you are finger picking, try flat picking, if you have been into Blues, try Country, if you're into Rock, try Jazz.....

I guess what I'm driving at is maybe the only reason you think it all sounds the same is because it is.... explore different genres, and styles, step out of your comfort zone and you'll be amazed what is out there waiting for you to "discover" it.  Music is so varied, it is hard to imagine running out of new material to conquer..... but I'd like to live long enough for that to happen to me!

My cure for a picking rut is new and different type tunes by artists that are challenging.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

Re: Where to next?

if you have too many chords it can be a bit repetitive. try adding riffs, licks and some intros/outros. nothing vast but just to make each song distinctive
