Topic: Fairclough Guitars

Has anyone brought one of the Steve Fairclough acoustic models. I had a quick strum of the Dreadnought River model recently but wondered if it really does perform when set up and playing. Steve's claim is that there is a serious upgrade in quality not reflected in the price! This one was about £200 alyhogh they do rise to £400+ which gets you thinking about Taylor,Martin or a hand built Walden.

Cheers and great forum.

Re: Fairclough Guitars

I've had a Dreadnought River for abut 18 months now and I am very happy with it. I think it was a bargain at not much more than £200. It's nice to play and sounds lovely.

Re: Fairclough Guitars

Here is a letter which I have emailed to the makers, I await their reply.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Electric River 01572

I have owned the above guitar for about 18 months but have hardly played it as I HATE IT with a vengeance!

I have two problems with it.

The first problem is that of tuning.

Using an external tuner (the built-in tuner doesn’t work) , I have tuned the guitar. I then played a note, three frets up the fret-board.

When in tune with “open strings† the instrument is “sharp† at the third fret and gets progressively sharper, note for note, the further one goes up the fret board e.g. Lower E, played at the third fret, should be “G† but on my guitar, it is somewhere between G and G#.

Can I do anything about this?

The second Problem is the action

Is there any way of improving the action?

At the final fret, the strings are 6mm from the fret board.

Is there anything that can be done about the above matters or should I just take the guitar to the tip and put the cost down to experience?

Yours faithfully,

Re: Fairclough Guitars

Welcome to Chordie gymboy! Just curious.. Have you carried it anywhere for a set up or to have it looked at. Almost all new guitars are in need of a set up and most of your problems would/could probably be solved by doing so.. 6mm is .24 inch, so a little under 1/4 inch and that's not too bad (not good either) for the last fret... What is the action at the 12th and 7th frets, as that will give us a better idea of your situation? High action can lead to your intonation issues because when the strings are higher from the fretboard you perform more of a bend when fretting the string pushing it to sharp. Probably a quick set of your neck relief, saddle, and nut would solve all your problems...

[b][color=#FF0000]If your brain is part of the process, you're missing it. You should play like a drowning man, struggling to reach shore. If you can trap that feeling, then you have something.

Re: Fairclough Guitars

Sounds like gyn-boy could do with spending a bit of time with an allen key and a small hex screw driver.  the guitar should have been better set up than that when you bought it, but tha said, It's not rocket science, setting up a guitar.  Oh and trya new battery in the tuner.
