Topic: Guitar Guild Meeting & Get Together

Hello,

Last week a few of us got together for our monthly get together. We meet at a members house and he has a really nice large recording studio and we gather round in a circle . We usually have somewhere between 10-20 musicians show up for the meetings and this one was really fun for me.

We had a nice assortment of instruments the host and hostess play a 12 string guitar and she plays an upright bass. We also had a resonator guitar and the guy playing it is super. We also had a banjo and a fiddle and 3 acoustic guitar players. We used to bring songs we liked to play with the chords and lyrics. Now they have gathered all our favorites and compiled them in a bunch of binders with an index.

We usually run through each song several times and it is amazing how they tighten up after a couple times. We try to keep it to 2 hr sessions but usually run over by a 1/2  hr.

I had a young fella sitting next to me that knew every song I did as we noodled around with a half dozen or better Neil Young songs and that was fun. I brought my sister in law along and she is a non player and she was so tickled and had the best time just sitting and taking it all in.

The Guitar Guild was started about 5 yrs ago and the Founding member just loved to play guitar and playing with others and sharing ideas and songs. He just put up posters at the local music store and around town. We met for the first meeting at a room in the local library about 5 yrs ago. When we  joined the guild we submitted our email address and phone numbers . After 5 yrs we are still having monthly get togethers and in the summer we get together tuesdays at the park.

I'm just gonna list the songs that I thought we played really well at the last meeting.

1. Wayfarring Stranger                                  Great feel good song !

2. Wagon Wheel    Old Crow Medicine Show     Fun, Fun to play with others !

3. Those Memories Of You          Dolly Parton   I didn't know this one but  it was a blast !

4. Wildwood Flower            Mabelle Carter        There were 2 guitars and our resonator that knew the picking of this one so it was
                                                                     Great !

5  Four Strong Winds          Ian Tyson               We run through this one a couple times and then a couple more just a Great Song
                                                                      to end a wonderful evening.

Playing with others is a great way to learn and pick up new tricks and ideas.

Man, that sounds like a lot of fun, wlbaye.  Makes me want to possibly check into the same thing in my area.

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Re: Guitar Guild Meeting & Get Together

Heya Pete,

It seemed pretty easy for our guild to get started. The first meeting we had somewhere around 20 people and we have had turnouts of 10-20 every month for the past 5 yrs. Usually when we have a large turnout we split up into smaller groups.

For holidays and some other functions, businesses and the Chamber have asked Guild members to play at their events. I work such an odd schedule so I miss alot of meetings. We are lucky to have a guy that started our guild that keeps us posted on any area happenings and opportunites to play. He's also the one that put our songbooks together and we are lucky to have the member that hosts the meetings in his home.

I just thought I would share this and maybe give some others at Chordie some ideas and ways to meet some other players and find a way of getting together with other music lovers .

Re: Guitar Guild Meeting & Get Together

Sounds like a blast Wayne. When I was working in WV, there was a monthly gathering that I joined in on a few times. It's great to learn / play with others. Would be great to find a similar gathering where I am now. So - any members in Spartanburg, SC during the week or in Winston-Salem, NC area on weekends - let's hook up!!

Rule No. 1 - If it sounds good - it is good!

Very Cool Wayne, I'm gonna have to check the London Kijiji or paper to see if there is anything like that happening around here.
Great Concept big_smile
