Topic: Setup to Record on CD

If this has already been covered elsewhere on Chordie, my apologies and please point me in the right direction.


I would like some information on recording voice and guitar using a computer. The end result desired is to improve singing and playing by listening to how I sound now. A by-product would be a recorded CD.


I have a computer with CD/DVD burner. I have Audacity software. I have an acoustic/electric guitar. What next?

Hi Gar,
yep, this has been brought up a few times but no need to appologise.
If you have the money you should get yourself a condenser microphone. You can get ones specially for pc's, cost about £90 and upwards. Might get one cheaper but I dont know.
Another good thing to have ( even though you have audacity) is guitar pro 3 ( calkwalk) it is a 32 trck recording studio.
It will take you time getting the right levels and positions for placing the microphone, but once you get that sound, you are set up. Write all things down that you do for recording so you can go back to look up notes on certain sounds etc.

You can plug your guitar straight into your computer's soundcard for recording, or thru an effects proccessor first. My mate does this and he gets some good songs, pity he cant sing though  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">  but he gets by!!

it can be very frustrating at times but dont give up.

Hello Gar

Whilst agreeing with Ken but just wondering, as I use an effects processor,  if his comment about singing was directed at me <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">, I think that the amount of funds available comes into this equation.

Alex (scrimmy82) has made a quite acceptable recording on a microphone only costing £5.00 from a supermarket. For recording to upload songs that you write for Chordie members to listen to or for your own analysis then this is fine. If you want to seriously publicize your recordings or make CD's for friends and family then you need the kind of gear that Ken mentioned.

I can also make copys of it.
