Topic: Harmonica

Well,  this time I made a commitment to myself to learn to play the harmonica . I have been workin on it for a week and have seen some progress and am startin to get it. When I get so I can play it with guitar and do a half decent job, I'm going back to the mandolin. I have played the mando about 6 yrs but mostly just chording and limited pickin but when I get back to it , I am gonna try and structure my practices better.

Anyways an old dog tryin to learn some new tricks smile

Re: Harmonica

Good luck, Wayne. I too am trying to learn harmonica, but when trying to play guitar and harmonica together, something entertaining happens. (The harp stand slips forward so that I can't reach the instrument.) Also, best wishes for the mandolin playing.

Re: Harmonica

Way to go.  They say that Grandma Moses was 80 when she started playing harmonica.   No, wait, that wasn't it...

Anyway, it's a fun instrument.  Mine have been sitting idle for a long time, but I've got some goals on guitar I want to reach and then there's this fiddle that has been pestering me.  I'll get back to them some day.

Re: Harmonica

I know what you mean Zurf, I was doing things on my guitar about 5 yrs ago that I wanted to get better at and thought the mandolin was taking too much of my time and I was stressing out too much over it.  Now I am getting more comfortable with my guitar playin so I'm gonna add the harmonica. The harp is working pretty good, I just played "Cant You See" with guitar and harmonica and my wife said Wow you are doing good for just going back to it. She never compliments me so I must be improving.
Next up is the mando, but I like Zurf , have a library of guitar, mandolin and harmonica instruction books and I  am using them with the harmonica and will with the mandolin too. I think if I would have done that with the guitar it wouldn't have taken me 30 yrs to learn the 3 chords and 3 songs I have in my bag smile

Thanks for the encouragement

Re: Harmonica

http://www.harptabs.com has harmonica tablature for most songs, and there are several good YouTube accounts with videos.

Re: Harmonica

Howdy,
Well I come out of the closet and posted my first vid with a harmonica, made some mistakes with the guitar that I usually don't but I found it is one more thing to think about and it distracts from the concentration, but what the heck I'm learning.

Re: Harmonica

^ great job Wayne - One of my long term goals is to learn the harp. Any advice as to brands / products? Is this cheap pack worthwhile for a beginner to learn on, or would I be better off spending the bucks on higher quality instruments?

What about holders - are any brands better than others? How bout ya Toney - got any advice?

Re: Harmonica

Thanks alot Jeff,
I bought the Hohner Hot Metal series and they were $10. each and I have been using a Progressive ,Beginner Harmonica instruction book $20. The book has a cd and a dvd , I took the book and cd to work with me, I have a lot of sit and wait time so I tried to give it 1/2 hr a day. It's been fun and I have been trying not to stress out over it and just have fun.
I tried in the past but the book I used that time started out with some tonque moves right away and I have a terrible gag reflex and I gave up before I started.
Anyway I was advised to start with the 10 hole Hohners , but I don't think I can help you learn to play I've only been strugglin along for about 2 weeks.
Oops I just looked at your link and that sure looks like a good deal, I bet SouthPaw would know a lot more than me, but 20 bucks aint alot to be out.
Thanks Again,

Re: Harmonica

I forgot about the holder , mine didn't have a brand name but it was $11.95  and it has the round neck piece with clear rubber hose for the neck portion and two wingnuts to adjust it were you need it. It seems to be right there when you need it. One thing to look for, make sure you get a holder that is made for the diatonic harmonica, cause they are shorter and can twist around in the holders that take the long harmonicas.

Good work Wayne.  You'll have to not hold back.  You're all over your game there.

Re: Harmonica

Thanks Steve !

Hey Tops,

If you and when you get started on the harmonica, get a holder. I think if I would have got a holder a few years ago it would have made things way easier. Having the guitar carrying the ryhthm and the melody of the song going through your head seems to make it so much easier. I wanted to share a couple 3 chord songs that sound good and are the easiest I have tried.
Can't You See, Marshall Tucker and
Standing On a Rock,  Ozark Mountain Dare Devils, I am really having fun with this one it is upbeat but an easy one, every day I can see improvement , wish my guitar playing would have come a little easier.

Re: Harmonica

I thought that sounded great. At least you looked and sounded like you knew what you where doing. I to struggle with the harp. All my stuff comes out sounding the same.
