Topic: Upright Bass??

Well my oldest son (11) is starting music this year in school and he's decided on playing upright bass. So now I'm shopping around for a good 1/2 size bass. It's his first venture with it (though he does play acoustic guitar and piano some) so I don't want to put too much in it. However, if he doesn't use it, I'm sure I'll get plenty of play out of it smile so I don't want to go too cheap either. Anyone know of some good brands to look at in the say $600-$800 range? Do I need to go a little higher for a good one or are they okay in this range? Thanks for any input you can offer! -Pix

Can't help you Pix, but I would be so excited to have a bass in my family, we have a guitar guild that meets and plays together and when a bass shows up they are like a celebrity. Also at the bluegrass fests I go to the upright bass players are so much appreciated. Seems in my wanders there are lots of guitar players and not many bass players. Sure hope it works out.
