Sorry to bump a well worn thread but when it comes to depressing songs Dolly Parton has cornered the market - Letter to Heaven, Jeanie's Afraid of the Dark and Little Andy spring to mind.  The song that brings a lump to my throat though is Randy Travis's Promises.

Another guitarist left us today.  Bert Weedon, major influence of many UK guitar players including the Beatles has died today at the age of 91.

Hi and welcome to Chordie.  Nellie Kane was written by Tim O'Brien of the band Hot Rize.

This one came to mind immediately - It's for my Dad by Nancy Sinatra

I think I have the sheet music around somewhere but it may take a few days to sort out

Who Let the Dogs Out is by the Baha Men.  I can't believe nobody suggested Old Yeller from the film of the same name http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWzTs5bxxnw

Another one I just came across which would have been more appropriate a month ago

"A Lonely Pup In a Christmas Shop" by Adam Faith http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0_NKL2nr6I

Hi

Julian Lennon's song Saltwater is very evocative to me with the line "We're so enchanted by how clever we are" contrasted by all of the things we are getting wrong in the world.
Another very powerful song is "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holliday which uses quite striking imagery to describe darker times in the Southern States.

I have made quite a collection of off-the-wall country songs and there are loads of great lines but my all time favourite is from Drop Kick Me Jesus Through The Goalposts of Life by Bobby Bare - "I've got the will Lord if you've got the toe"

Hi

I don't know a lot about these guitars but I believe they were manufactured from1989-1997, the specs are Spruce Laminate Top, Mahogany Back and 1 Piece Mahogany Neck,
Rosewood Fret Board, Rosewood Bridge CF laminate.  As it is not specified I presume the sides are also laminate. The price is a bit much.  Have a look around they are available from $75 up to $199 depending on condition. I would leave well alone unless you can get the seller to lower his valuation.

Regards

Hi Johngohn

I haven't seen this before and I don't know of anything you can turn on or off to show or hide the chord diagrams.  The chord diagrams are shown if the song is in Chordie format with the words "variations - click chord images" below them.  The only other option I know of is when the song is not in Chordie format the words "Presented as text" will appear where the chords are normally shown.  Can you point me to an example of what you are seeing?

Thanks

Ian

Hi Harold

Welcome to Chordie.  I believe this is a jazz chord notation where a "-" symbol indicates a minor chord and the "o" symbol denotes a diminished chord therefore the chord you are looking at is Ab dim.
You can find alternative fingerings here http://www.chordie.com/voicings.php?tun … ord=Abdim.
If I am wrong on this somebody will put me right soon enough.

Hi Guys

I hadn't seen this error with my own songbook and assumed from the previous post by Chris that it had been resolved.  However I am receiving the mysql error this evening.  Can anyone let us know the latest status please?
Happy New Year to each and all at Chordie.

Ian

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas wherever in the world you are and however you celebrate this wonderful holiday.  May you all get everything your heart desires.  More importantly may the good Lord bless us all with peace and happiness.

As with most musical terms being derived from French or Italian the word barre (there should be an accent on the e) is derived from the past participle of the French verb barrer and simply means barred.  Nobody is strict about the usage nowadays so I wouldn't worry too much if you use bar, barre or pronounce it as it was originally from the French ie barray.
All useless information since knowing this doesn't make barre chords any easier to play.

Hi Allisloth

The chords are already here http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … 71080.html although I think the lyrics aren't quite right

Jerome

There has been a show on Sky in the UK recently that has concentrated on original acts with original music.  It is called Must Be the Music and was won by a 27 year old busker from Glasgow who called herself Emma's Imagination (there are videos on Youtube and she is pretty good).  Judges are Jamie Cullum, Dizzee Rascal and Charlene Spiteri and it is far removed from the X Factor.  It is worth watching for me as all of the songs are original and made available on I-Tunes for download giving all of the contestants a chance to make a little bit of money from the show.

Looking back I've done a lot in my time.  Medical records clerk (18 years old and working with 33 women - I learnt a lot!!), small business advisor, customer service rep for Vodafone, purchasing spares for the Royal Navy, purchasing manager for a conservatory company, teacher of IT to adults, teacher of English to foreign nationals (mainly Libyan and Algerian), and for most of the last 10 years a computer network technician and installer of servers and IT systems for small and medium sized companies.  I also dabbled in computer multi media systems providing information systems in a variety of companies such as airports and sports stadia.  I really loved the hands on computer stuff but my employer decided I was no longer useful.  Due to changes in Health and Safety legislation I am not allowed to install network cabling, server cabinets and routers.  In the UK now you need to be a qualified electrician to install cabling of any kind.  I couldn't believe he refused to allow me time to retrain for something I am already expert in.  Currently looking to get back into training as this is something I really love doing.  I have also been registered to provide First Aid in the Workplace for many years.

Hi Alviskleen

Most guitar websites now have online tuners.  While they may not be the best answer they will help you to get your guitar roughly in tune.
Try this one http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/onlinetuner.html

Hi Russell

So glad that it's nothing more than gallstones.  I send you my best wishes that everything goes well with the surgery.  I'm sure it will be a great relief to be pain free.

All the very best

Hi Autonut

Try here - http://www.audio-stream-karaoke.com/gui … ?RefID=593 it's called Guitaraoke.  As far as I know it's quite a new product and I have only seen a demo on the web but it looks like what you are talking about.  The choice of songs also looks a little bit limited but, like anything else, if it takes off I suppose that won't be a problem.  What worries me with this is that there are very good karaoke singers out there and very good guitarists but some are very bad - now couple a bad singer with a bad guitar player and that will give the cynics 2 reasons to hate karaoke.

Hi guys

I'm a lefty and proud.  My early education took place in 60's UK when teachers tried everything to force me to be right handed even to the point of tying my left hand behind my back.  I refused to be bullied even at the age of 5.  As far as the guitar is concerned my parents didn't even think a guitar could be right or left handed when they bought me a KL classical at Christmas 1969.  I tried for 3 months to get to grips with it as a right hander but eventually gave up and threw it to one side.  My dad was put out when I stopped playing but when I explained the problem he disappeared with the guitar to his workshed and a few hours later brought me it back with the bridge and nut adjusted and all of the strings on the right way round.  It was so much easier to play.  The only trouble I have ever had since is with chord diagrams (Chordie has solved that as you can turn them around) and learning TAB - the TAB issue might just be down to me though.
