So working for our fire department, nearly everyone gets a nickname.  If you didn't get one, you kind of worried.  Some of them are G-rated, and others not so much.  Some examples include; Joe "Barely" Moving,   Tom "The Scarecrow" (never did any work), "Bro-nocchio" (who called everyone Bro and was known for stretching the truth), and "Googleopoulous" (a greek fellow who always fact checked your story on his cell phone's Google app).

Early in my career, a friend who was a former state wrestling champion in high school, came up behind behind me and tried to get me in a bear hug.  Me being more on the "husky" side, he couldn't get his arms locked around me.  He said, "You're big, big like a Kodiak bear!".  A couple of shifts later, we were riding in the fire truck and heard "Movin Out" by Billy Joel.  The part where he sings "Working too hard can give you a heart attack, ack, ack" was quickly replaced by my wrestler buddy with Kodiak, ak, ak. and it has stuck ever since.

Hi Chordians,

Here in South Florida (Pembroke Pines near Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale), we fared okay.  Some still without power, running water and (Gasp!) Cable and Internet.  The end result could have been much, much worse here, as the damage to the Keys is horrible.  People are worried if some areas may ever recover.  Have to think the lessons learned from Andrew and the additional building code requirements saved some of our bacon.  We had gusts recorded at 109mph, which surprisingly took down many older, native trees, but most structures were not damaged.  If we could only figure out how to protect utility poles and power lines.

I did see two reports of looting during the storm posted on social media.  I want to say that those were isolated incidents.  People around here have been awesome; helping one another put up hurricane shutters, behaving on long gas lines, and being courteous to others while shopping the limited items left on the supermarket shelves.  I'd like to think that people in general are good, and most pull together in times of need.   I'm happy to have my electricity and water back on tonight, so maybe some electric guitar and a nice hot shower!

Beautiful guitar!

I have a Takamine that my wife gave me as a gift last year,  and until today, never realized the saddle design.  I guess that means I'm not playing it enough.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Thanks everyone for clarifying.  I too will check my books to be sure they're public.

Hi Everyone,

Hope everyone in the US had a good Labor Day and everyone got the kids back to school on time.  I'm sure they were all eager to go back. lol

I just had a quick question regarding the public songbooks, which appear to have not had any additions in a very long time.  Is that the case, or is my browser not refreshing properly?  It's nice to scroll through other users favorites and see if there's a new version of a song or just a song I didn't remember to look for on my own.

Thanks as always!

Adam

Hello all,

You know, with all of the hatred and vitriol being spewed the last 2 weeks during these political conventions, I had to say kudos to all of you involved in the above string of messages.  What a pleasure it its to see civilized human dialogue and manners on display.  (even though I have to admit some of the initial remarks were awesome and right up my native New Yorker's sarcastic alley).

Qazzz, you realized your mistake and had the guts to come back and take your medicine.  Well done.  All you have to do is just spend a few minutes, or hours reading these forums and you'll see how nice all these people are.  I wish I had more time to be more involved here, it's a feel good escape.   The ads pay the bills so we don't have to, so that's a small price to pay after all.  Keep playing, keep searching, and play what makes you feel good!

Welcome back to the Forums Kodiak!!  Nice to have another Northwesterner among us.

Don't envy you the commute though..... every time you step off the plane to be wearing entirely the wrong wardrobe.  smile
Not one to talk though, I'm that "socks and sandals" guy.  You know knit watch cap, hoodie, shorts, wool socks and.... yes, sandals (as long as the slush isn't too deep).  Check in more often as there's a good bunch of folks hanging around.

Hi Doug,

You are so right.  Always either under dressed or over dressed getting of the plane!  I will say I was amazed at how many people actually wear shorts in the Pacific NW, even with snow on the ground.

Regards,

Adam

Hi all,

I have to remember to come to the forum more often.  There's always something cool here, like this map.

Officially, we recently relocated the family and now live in Puyallup, Washington, about 45 miles south of Seattle.  I continue to work in Pembroke Pines, Florida (between Miami and Fort Lauderdale) and commute back and forth every few weeks.

I keep 2 guitars in Florida and have another in Washington for when I'm home.  Sad thing is, none of them sound as good as I would hope yet, but I am persevering!  I was blessed with Italian Sausage Fingers!

Best wishes and regards to all Chordians worldwide.  What a great way to make the world smaller!

Love the new format!  Bright, easy to read, (especially for 50 year old eyes!).  At first I thought "Oh no, where's Chordie?"  What a nice surprise.  Thanks to all who work on the site for our enjoyment!

Hi All,

Growing up in New York City I was never much of soccer (football/futbol) fan.  We had too many professional American sports to watch.  There was a brief romance in the late 70's with the NY Cosmos, and their aging European stars, but that died after a few short years.  Fast forward to being a father of 3 girls in Florida, only one of which played club soccer.  Then one day my oldest starts watching Barcelona matches, because the players are "cute".  So being a stubborn, uneducated American sports fan, I tell her soccer is boring, no scoring, and full of prima donnas.  Well, I'm sure you can figure out how that went over with a teenage girl.  So I put my tail between my legs, apologized and gave soccer a chance.  Watched mostly La Liga and EPL matches and started to learn the formations and strategies. Then one day went to see Barcelona with her when they came to South Florida and I could not believe the excitement. The stadium was full, the chants were magical and the atmosphere was electrical.   I was hooked.  I've since been to numerous matches, many of the Guinness Challenge matches and learned the names of players and teams I never knew existed.

I now either watch live or set my DVR to record as many matches as possible.  I have a hard time convincing my coworkers at the firehouse to sit through an entire match, but many are coming around.  Still favor EPL (Chelsea) and La Liga (Barca) but watch many Bundesliga and Italian league matches as well.  Visited Spain and Italy this spring and went to both Bernabeu and Camp Nou stadiums, as well as AS Roma.  Spent one of the best nights of my life in a pub in Barcelona to watch a Classico against Madrid (tickets were over 400 Euro, so we watched on TV)  Looking forward to visiting London next year and at least getting to Stamford Bridge and Emirates Stadium while there.  Unfortunately, it's an international break so I won't get to see any matches live.

I guess this long winded post is more of a confession of how I came to love soccer, and a humble apology for trashing it for all those years.  I still watch my Baseball/Football/Hockey games, but I enjoy my soccer just as much, if not more.

Regards to all,

Adam

JJJ - I work 24 hour shifts and don't usually get to sleep when I get home at 9:00am. By the time I do get to sleep I'm usually overtired and wound up at 10pm.   If I'm overtired, I'll use Melatonin as well, it works wonders and is natural and non-habit forming.  Also, I've used youtube videos found while searching for "sleep hypnosis" and "sleep relaxation" videos.  They are 30min to 3 hour videos that get talk you through meditation and relaxation, deep breathing and other techniques.  Best of luck.

Gemba,

This is THE site for beginners like you and me. I have been "playing" (more like attempting) for about 1 1/2 years.  I visit chordie every day to see what new books are posted.  Stick to the Absolute Beginner at first, but you can search through all the other songbooks too, as they have some easy songs as well.  The thing to remember is that chordie has the ability to transpose songs, so try changing a song up or down 1 or 2 steps and you might find that the chords will fall in line with what you are more comfortable with.  I would much rather play an E instead of an F or an Am instead of a Bm.  Be creative, but dont forget to practice every day.  I am addicted to my guitar, it has been my "mid-life crisis" which has brought me more joy than I ever expected.  Keep playing!

Remember, fellow Chordians that I am not a Johnny Come Lately Jet fan. I am a professional when it comes down to knowing how to suffer better than most.  40 years of hope, excitement, and promises to be followed by certain heartbreak makes for a very humble and "non-cocky" fan.

We had to endure Shula's mud bowl in the 82 AFC Championship game, with 3 INT's by AJ Duhe.  Then the following year Ken O'Brien being drafted before Dan Marino, who consistently whipped our asses, including the infamous fake spike touchdown.  Losing to Denver in 99 AFC Championship, Missed FG's by Doug Brien in the playoffs against the Steelers....there's countless more.

Rex has made it fun this year, but every team will be gunning for them.  This week against the Fins promises to be a war, as was last year's MNF game which went down to the last minute.  Two good defenses, average at best offenses, I would bet the under myself.

Bottom line? With a glass of wine or a cold beer, some tasty snacks and a big screen TV, what's better than a Sunday afternoon and football?  And a small suggestion for Badeye, you need to watch more "chick flix" with the wifey on Saturday nights... it pays off big on sundays!

Geoaguiar

Forget about Tuesday morning, that loss took til Sunday to get over.  What a disappointment. Good run defense was the only positive.  Today will be another test against Beli-cheat and the Pats.

And my worst nightmare, the Dolphins are 2-0 already.  Waaahhhhh

The J-E-T-S are my team.  Probably the only fan left after HBO's Hard Knocks and Sexy Rexy's profanity rants.  What's worse is I live in South Florida amongst the Fins Fans.  I'm sure even casual fans are rooting for them to crash and burn now that they are so cocky.

It has been 40 long years since we last won the SuperBowl and we have had our hearts crushed a few too many times since then.  I'm cautiously optimistic about this season and there is a LOT riding on tonight's game.  I am ready for some football!
