lukebass wrote:My life revolves around music. It is truly the center of my universe. Bob Marley and the Wailers are by far the most influential band in my life. I was born a little late to watch their albums come out so the first one I heard was their greatest hits aka Legend. Not their best album by any means but definitely the one that impacted me more then any other.
Legend has simple music made to sound like lush orchestration by adding notes in the off beat parts. The classic reggae guitar playing simple chords but playing them on the the "ands" (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and), the organ filling on the rock steady rhythm behind (rock steady is a reggae style. Google it), The solid, steady drum and bass to root the music, the entire band using rests to make room for a shared melody and then of course there is Bob.
In Bob Marley's own words he wrote songs "so even a baby could understand". They were meaningful, powerful, insightful and above all heartfelt. Bob's words were a beginning of a realization for me. I now know the most important part of music is not what you play or sing but your intent behind your actions. The most important part of music is why you play.

you really are passionate about music, aren't you

What I did find surprising was this list of songs deemed inappropriate to play on radios after the 9/11 attacks.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_so … 01_attacks
I wonder how long they were deemed to be unsuitable to air.
Ark
can't believe they banned the foos
that is quite a lot of songs
hi

And since when is Greenday punk?
green day started out as punk
have a listen to their '90 album 1039/smoothed out slappy hour
there are hundreds of really talented new bands out there who havn't made it in the mainstream because they are just not what people want
picking the first one that comes to my head, mayday parade, they have written good songs and know how to play their instruments but just have never had the breaks that other bands have had
for me it is a fender f3
i got it second hand off my grandad, not bad condition but i hate the sound of it so i went back to playing a 40 quid piece of junk that sounds awesome, dont laught, im serious
its amazing that a terrible guitar can sdound amazing as long as it feels right
i learnt on a £40 crappy guitar but i love the sound of it, i have never paid more than £150 for a guitar but it is amazing what you can get second hand. i got a beautifull fender off my grandad, good comdition but a little dirty
my advise is to start on a crap guitar and if you like playing then get a nice guitar that you like the sound of, its not about the cost, it is about the feel
when i get stuck in a rut i play the very first song i learn to play, the song that taught me guitar

thats how i play it but that might be wrong
shaunm wrote:I think a law should be passed that says that no one is allowed to pick up an electric guitar until they've done AT LEAST a year learning on an acoustic. And, furthermore ALL electric guitar players, regardless of style (including you shredders...you know who you are!) must be made to play an acoustic guitar at least once a month.
Even better, once a year, on a national holiday perhaps, all guitarists must play nothing but twelve string acoustics..blindfolded..on stilts.
Playing an acoustic guitar hurts your fingers and hands and, when you're learning, can leave you feeling inadequate, especially when you watch the four-hundred mile an hour shredders doing their thing and your still struggling to hit an F chord (ah, the F!). You'll hit a stage where you're not getting any better. Just keep practicing and you WILL improve. It just takes time and finger ends of steel. Then, when you've finally got it, get an electric and a HUGE amp and play away, knowing that you've learned to play the right way.
now i bought an electric guitar after playng acoustic for 2 months and i think that anyone should be able to play anything after playing any length of time.
i think folk is easyist to play cos you barely have to press the strings
i just play 004442 if that makes sense
barred chords confuse me
i have been playing about 6 months and know my chords and can read tab but thats it
i dont think theory is that important, guitar is about soul, not knowing hundreds of ways to play a G
i have never bothered with theory and i doubt i ever will because i just dont think i need to, as long as i can play with feeling then i will be happy

if you can give these bands and album a listen
Stiff little fingers..... nobody's hero
the clash.................london's burning
the alarm................declaration
skids......................days in europa
ok when you have heard these report back and I will give you another 4.
Also, not my sort of thing but I saw " less than jake" when they played with "Drop kick Murphys" they seem to be a band that younger people seem to be into.

i limewired a load of the clash, stiff little fingers, sex pistols, ramoanes and rancid. it is really cool. can anyone suggest any more?
SouthPaw41L wrote:Upon their initial emergence, Green Day was about as punk as they come. Their commercial success however softened them and now they have a guitar player and a keyboardist performing with the original 3, unseen behind or under the stage. Pretty un-punk if you ask me. You want punk? Listen to the New York Dolls, early Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Ramones, and best of all-time (IMO) The Sex Pistols!
agree completely
i may only be 14 but i love green days 90-97 stuff,
i was born way too late cos i have only heard of green day but im a huge fan of their 90-97 stuff
jesus of suburbia by green day(the official vid) is 12 mins but that was never a major hit i dont think(i was 9 at the time so i cant remenber)
i personally don't like their new album, it just doesn't seem right to me (i got seriosly told off on youtube for saying that)
i love their early stuff(90-97) and i wish i could have been able to see them but im only 14 so i wasnt born then.
megan
by the way, foxboro hot tubs isnt just green day, thenve got 3 other dudes in it
vocals-gerard way
guitar-billie joe armstrong
bass-mark hoppus
drums-tre cool
sounds wierd but i like it
i've been playing since christmas and i don't bother with theory or scales. i just get the chords for songs i like and belt them out on my cruiser st-120 electric guitar, my fender f3 folk guitar or my ridgewood c530 classic acoustic.
im trying to learn to barre aswell, i can barre up to four string but i cant do the six
id love to get a kind of jam session going cos the only other guitar player in my family is my mum and she plays folk(urg)
