i have problems with a pick too.  i sound pretty good finger picking and it's harder to keep the rhythm with a pick...but it's louder with a pick so i'm torn between wanting to use a pick and not.  good idea rounding it off more, it does sound too harsh with a point!  i was wondering if anyone uses a thumb pick and likes it cuz i use my thumb to pick anyway.  lemme know!

one word: bridgecraft.

i started on my "beginner" in june and after 6 weeks realized i wasn't gonna get far with it.  it's a bridgecraft and the action is so high it's painful to play.  playing on it for a couples hours a day for just 6 weeks though was enough practice to learn about 4 songs, though they didn't sound too great on that beast.  anyway i went into guitar center and picked up a yamaha apx500 and discovered that i actually sounded great and could play those few songs much better on a quality guitar.  now the yamaha is my main guitar and i can play about 10 songs well enough that people can recognize them, after 2 months of playing that's good enough for me!  i don't know a thing about johnson guitars but if they are anything like bridgecraft you should at least start looking and playing around on a few until you decide what it is you're looking for next.

i ended up getting a yamaha apx500fm.  i'm very much in love and we are very happy together, i will never go back to the other guitar again.  i've donated it to my kiddos entertainment : )

i have an apx500fm...don't know if that's the exact same as the apx500 or not...but i agree.  yamaha apx models are awesome.  i can sit around strumming mine for hours.  never thought about a 12 string, sounds difficult to me, but i'd say go for it.  or at least find one in person and test it out!

hi, i just started playing about 6 weeks ago.  i practice about an hour or two a day and i can already play three songs almost just like they sound...well, four if you count "twinkle twinkle" haha!  yeah, i just think it depends on how much time you put in and how much you're taking on at once.  if you just stick to one or two songs at a time and practice like crazy you should be able to play them within a few weeks!

well i found one that plays great, feels great, sounds great and is absolutely gorgeous to look at and was lucky enough to take it home with me last night!  i'm a much better player than i thought now that i found a real guitar..haha!  i can't put this thing down and can't wait to finally be able to use the tabs on this site!

so yeah, i started out on the cheap crappy one.  i've mastered quite a few chords and i'm puttin together some songs and stuff.  it's nice to see progress!  i'm getting a new guitar for my birthday in two months.  i'm looking at some acoustic/electric guitars.  the one i started on has some serious high action and has been ripping my fingers up pretty good.   i was wondering if an acoustic electric guitar would be easier to play.  i'm looking in the 300 dollar range and found a few that look pretty nice.  i played an electric briefly when i was much younger..and have been now teaching myself on this cheap acoustic for a little over a month.  any input would be appreciated!

yeah, this thing is rough to play that's for sure, but i can already see some progress.  i'm definitely looking foward to an upgrade already.  my birthday is 3 months from today and my fiance told me that it's probably what i'll be getting...either that or by christmas.  my fingers are sore as hell, it's only been a week, but i've been practicing several times a day.  this guitar is a bridgecraft i guess...you can tell it's made cheap, but it does have a good sound...once i finally got the thing in tune!  anyone know what a good guitar for around $200 would be?  i'd really like to get a good acoustic/electric so i can rock out when the mood suits me : )

you guys have great advice.  and bensonp..that was my thought too.  if i deserve a better one in a year then i'll get one.  and this way i'll have one to pass down to my kids who are already little music freaks : )

thanks guys, appreciate the feedback!  that's kind of what i thought..i just want to get the most out of my learning experiences.  years back as a teenager i took lessons but didn't stick with it.  this time around i'm doing it on my own and i'm much more determined.  this looks like an awesome site, a buddy of mine referred me and it looks like i'll be spending a lot of my summer here!

i used to play when i was like 15/16.  i'm 28 now and am about to attempt to get serious and learn because i write a lot and do nothing constructive with it.  i love music of all kinds and my dad's an awesome musician so it's in my blood.  i just ordered a very cheap acoustic from ebay to learn on and i'm just wondering if i made a good decision.  obviously i wont be out much money if i didn't, but will it affect my learning at all if the thing is as big of a piece as i suspect it is??
