I remember being very nervous but I want to do it for personal progression.  I played the song too fast and stopped at one stage, then on a second attempt through nerves I forgot the words to the song which I know backwards and on top of that I gave myself a friction burn on my strumm fingers when I hit the strings.  Would I do it again... absolutely.

Since then I have had several opportunities to step up but have declined and afterward I have been disappointed in myself.  I know I can play, I'm not so confident about my voice but my friends have said I sing fine but I am getting in my own way.

My advice is to go for it, you only live once and we all make errors but thats how we learn [I'm going to read this and follow my own advice next time the opportunity arises]... Best of luck all.

Thanks everyone for the good comments.  Ray good idea about getting a mic for my home, will definitely do that.

Detman101, I dont advise the meltdown, its not pretty, lol.

Mekidsmom I read your thread a short while ago where you were performing [with your Dad I think] and I dedicded I must do that.

Now to give you a laugh, if had to play a third song I probably would have given myself a guitar life threatening injury, let me expalin - during one of my songs which was upbeat the pick slipped in between the wrong fingers and I was stumming so fast I gave myself a friction burn on the middle finger of my strumming hand.  Sore as hell but I wont do that again, lol...

Finally, Dino48 - me and Jim Morrison in the same thread, now I know it was all worth it...

Thanks Roger and Nela for your advise.  I could sing and play both songs now without sheets, my problem on the night was I didnt realise till it was over how much the nerves would effect my performance.  It was the guitar lesson you just cant buy...

Quick backgound information - playing from scratch for a lilttle under 1 1/2 years,  Never played or sang publically before.

Some friend of mine who have been playing guitar for years have formed a band and having been playing in local pubs and clubs in my home area.  Saw them for the first time about 2 months ago and they were very good.  Gar the lead singer suggest to me to get on stage with them to play and sing a song or two.  I jokingly passed it off and muttered I'll have to go and practice first [I would be shy to a certain extent].  It caught up with me 2 nights ago, they played locally again and I was confronted [in my own mind I know I have to do this to develop as a guitar player, out of the comfort zone if you like] to play again.  Dont know what came over me but I said alright and my debut on stage began.

It was the most frightening experience of my life.  I played and sang 2 songs, I was concentrating so much I forgot the chords to the first song and stopped midway and started again, then on the second song I was so determined to get the chords right I lost my way with the words.  When it was over I thanked the lads [who were delighted I did it and said well done, fair play to ya], I sat down and in my head thought 'what a disaster, I must have looked a right idiot'.  Still despite all this there was a self satisfaction that I had the guts to do it.

I really have a great appreciation of anyone who plays in public but I suppose [I hope] it gets easier from here...

Thanks Zurf, it was the sound that made me choose this guitar, the body is large so the bass sound to me was smooth, dont know why but the Ibanez just called to me and we hit it off...

Hi Manicbassman, I kinda know how you are fixed, I live in the midlands in Ireland so not a huge choice of music shops around.  I have one in my town but didnt like any of the guitars there so I had to travel about 25 miles to buy the one I eventually did, and I'm glad I did.  I dont have much experience with dfferent guitars but would recommend the Ibanez, I'm delighted with it...

Thaks all...

Hi guys/gals,

Just an update, I have made a purchase... yahoo.  Was not sure about the appearance at first but I couldnt get away from the sound, the starter guitar is history and I have my first proper playable and sounding guitar.  Look at the link and give your opinion... oh yeah I nearly forgot, in the end I bought the Ibanez EW20ZWE Acoustic Electric Guitar and am glad I did.

Your adivse was a great help, with a clear and open mind I went through several guitars and settled on the one that sounded the best to me and I felt comfortable with...

Appreciate all the comments, I guess what you really mean to advise is dont limit myselt to one model in the Epi range, while I'm at it give a couple of Takimines and Alverez guitars a test.

I'll keep an open mind and play as many guitars as possible while in the shop, then choose which one I like the feel and sound of best.  For the right guitar my buget can increase, it only means waiting a bit longer with extra payments before I can collect, but the right guitar would be worth waiting for.

Thank all, you've been a great help... very much appreciated.

Thank guys/gals for the adivse [dfoskey I have €500 in mind buget wise].  Most of my guitar playing at the moment is without a pick up and although I'm disappoiinted to hear the guitar I'm looking at struggles with sound on its own I am glad I didnt make what I see now could be a mistake.  I'll still give it a play but luckly for me the shop I'm heading to has a good range of guitars so I'll experiment with quite a few.  Takimine seems to be the make that keeps haunting me, so with your good advice I'm definitely going to give this make of guitar a try.

Thinking about changing the heading on this thread to 'thanks for the help, not buying an Epiphone I think???'

Thanks as usual, the Chordie population has spoken some wise words.

Ok, I know adivse is always to play the guitar you intend to buy and I will when the time comes.

I have been playing a year, spent €100 on a guitar to get me started and want to upgrade.  I have my eye on a Epiphone 6 string Semi Acoustic [Model PR-5E].  I dont know enough about makes and models so thats why I'm calling for advise.  Has anyone got this model, are Epiphone a recommended make to purchase.

Thanks, I know ye wont let me down...

Hi mekidsmom...

As the person who started the thread thanks for your reply, I have valued everyones opinion so far but your is the most relevant to my initial question due to you having received vocal lessons.  You have made up my mind for me so Ill give the lessons a shot.  I want to get more efficient with the 6 string first but its in my plans for the future.

And no Ive never minded a chick at all [especially one with the voice of an angel, lol].

Hi Crevs.1972... I had a listen and I applaude your courage to put yourself on the Tube.  I dont think I could be as brave, you seem to be progressing well and your wish of being a party animal at bbq's and home get togethers is closer than you think.  Well done mate.  Ps.  I reckon your a Dave Grohl lookalike with the long hair.  Your description of the chords, the keys and the experimentation with the Capo is exactly where I am in my guitar journey and if 1972 is your dob we are the same age also.

Hi Zurf... you make me laugh, I like the idea of the booze to help my cause, might just try it, and yes I make the grade of appropriate age, lol...

Thank for your views.

Thanks for the feedback...

I dont have a problem singing with the guitar, i consider myself an average singer [bit on the shy side, sing in my own company only] and can keep the rythm of the song with the rythm of my guitar playing.  I suppose I just want to be better and was wondering had anyone got vocal lessons and what was their experience.

I understand what is said in the comments above and its helps, thanks...

Hi all,

Dont post much but do have a question you may be able to assist me with.

Ive been learning the guitar for 9 months and find that when I sing and play at the same time its difficult, I dont think I sound that good [not a brillant singer anyway].

My question is has anyone every taken vocal lessons and would it be advisable to do so.  Have I a limit or would such lessons help me improve.

Thanks in advance, interested to read you responses...

Hi Seersha,

Firstly hold your head high, take a deep breath and let go of the bad experience and the anger.  To use a religious term music could be your calling.  From what ive read you want to learn the guitar and when you want something you put more effort into getting it.

Go find musical people around you, learn from them but most of all enjoy the guitar, enjoy the music.  Most presents received when you were 15 i assume are gone but isnt it a sign the guitar is still there.

When you get going and I believe you will, make it your mission to get on a stage some night some where and play your sound, this time the response will banish the pain of the past.

Music is a powerful healer.

Best of luck and if you want it make it happen.

Awesome idea Wlbaye,

This should be very helpful to us beginners. What I really need (I'm sure I'm not the only one) is strumming patterns for each song I want to learn.

Im also a newbie and its prob available somewhere but in the songbooks it woud be helpful to have the strum patterns as well as everything else or someone start a thread where its totally songs with the strum patterns.  If this is available already please let us know.

Keep the music coming, its keeping me relaxed and saine...
